I have a colt HBAR AR-15, that I got during the Clinton gun ban. So no flash hider or bayonet lug. Well I had the barrel turned for a flash hider a couple of years ago and I do not really care about a bayonet.

Here is my question how hard would it be to replace the barrel with a 16in barrel and how much should it cost? I want a good barrel or would I be better off just getting a new upper even though colt uses that odd size pin that you have to get an adapter for if you want a different upper?

I recently took the colt armor's course for the m-16/ar-15, and it seems to me the expense of having if rebarreled is going to be about the same as just replacing the upper. but if you buy the second upper you have a two uppers, one of which is still original. The time may come when AWB era firearms gain collector value for some reason, at which point originality would be the primary factor to determine value. just food for thought.

You can buy the barrel yourself and install it. All you'll need is an upper receiver vise block ($40), and an AR armorer's wrench ($25). If you wander over to AR15.com, there's a pinned thread in the "Build it Yourself" forum that shows you how to do it, step-by-step. It's so easy that I'm thinking of doing it to change one of my .223 AR's over to 7.62x39.

Basically it will cost you $65 in tools, and the price of the barrel.
