Legal semi-auto Stens?

I have heard that you can buy a parts kit for a Sten that will make it into a semi-auto only. If it is semi-auto and has a 16" bbl, would it be legal? Assuming that it had a fixed stock and met the overall length requirments, what would be wrong with doing this?

The semi-auto kit includes a 80% receiver with the parts needed to make it into a semi-auto instead of a full-auto. It would be making a gun in effect, I think it is legal to do this as long as it is for your own use and not for resale.

Someone correct me if I am wrong because it seems to good to be true. I could probably make a semi-auto Sten for less than $200! How cool would that be?

Sorry to say it's not as easy as that. I looked into doing the same thing myself, and found that in order to make it legal you have to completly change the firing mechanism effectivley making it a completly differant weapon that resembles a sten on the outside.
The reason behind this is the sten fires from open bolt, which the ATF has determined is to easy to convert from semi-auto back to full-auto, same reason why they stopped making open bolt mac-10's.

Valkyrie Arms in Washington is making semi-auto copies of the Sten Mk II and III ( http://www.valkyriearms.com/sten.htm ); they look sort of funky with the 16" barrel, but the MK II comes with a dummy original-length barrel, or you could shorten the barrel and register it as an SBR.

I think the semi-auto receiver is suppose to change the Sten from an open bolt to a closed bolt. That is what I thought was so cool about it. I have to check with my buddy to see what he was talking about. He knows more about guns than I do. Maybe he was wrong or misunderstood something he saw.

I will let you know what I find out because I think it would be cool to be able to get one of these guns and make it legal.

One of the people on calguns made a sten kit, if it's legal here you can probably get them in a happy meal in other States.
