Legality of bringing a rifle from NY to NJ to shoot?

A question for those familiar with NJ law - is it OK for me (I live in NY) to drive with my rifle (locked in the trank of my car) to a range in NJ?
I was invited by a coworker in NJ to shoot his handguns (I don't yet have NYC pistol license, so only own rifles). I would like to bring a rifle or two along, but only if it doesn't mean risking trouble with the law in NJ...

Also, what about transit through NJ with a rifle in my car? I mean, if I have to cross NJ on the way to upstate NY, or PA?

I would really appreciate an advice on these situations!

All firearms transported into the State of New Jersey:
Shall be carried unloaded and contained in a closed and fastened case, gunbox, securely tied package, or locked in the trunk of the automobile in which it is being transported, and in the course of travel, shall include only such deviations as are reasonably necessary under the circumstances.

The firearm should not be directly accessible from the passenger compartment of the vehicle. If the vehicle does not have a compartment separate from the passenger compartment, the firearm and ammunition must be in a locked container other than the vehicle's glove compartment or console.

For additional exemptions refer to Chapter 39, namely 2C:39-g.

Beware other NJ gotchas:


-No hollowpoints (There are exceptions, but why need a lawyer?)
-No mags > 15 rounds (they can be blocked to <= 15 rounds)
-They've got a "directly to or from an approved place" clause, meaning don't stop off @ aunt Millies. "reasonable AND necessary" stops are OK. (gas, food, etc)

Of course the federal 1986 Firearm Owners Protection Act trumps NJ state law and allows you to carry your firearms from any location where they are legal to any other location where they are legal, even if travelling through states like NJ.

For some reason, NJ fails to follow this law on occassion.

Sorry Geek with a .45, but the part about blocking them is no longer true. According to a ruling last year, blocked mags are now illegal.

Got the citation on the ruling?

The last I heard, they shot themselves in the foot by trying to pass a regulatory measure clarifying that blockages had to be permement, which failed, and therefore brought into judicial notice the fact that temporarilly blocked mags were acceptable.

Nappen doesn't have anything on his site, and he's usually on top of this sort of thing.
