Legendary guns and guns that have a "cult" following

What the heck is wrong with Glocks? Haven't you read the studies? All of the articles?! The things are perfect!

:)

Yea I know.

The thing is, if they were Glock Perfection to start with, why are they up to Gen 4 now and still having problems?

Cults are by definition irrational. You can love 1911s, AKs, ARs, etc. but to think they are special places more importance on the weapon than the shooter which makes you by definition deranged.

Well since you mentioned cult I think of this...http://www.parkcitiestactical.com/

The police trade in guns are now going for more than new Glocks and that's the basic 8 round heel mag release model.
True. I hope to sell a P7 PSP this friday and I am asking $675. I just tonight brought home a new G19 Gen 4 for $462.96 otd. I still have another P7 I could sell if the price was right.

There is a tacticool expert on Youtube who can explain to you exactly what the finest "tactical" guns on earth are.

He's a paid hack and talks too much but so what.

Hell I dunno about those newer ones, I'm still burning rounds out of my Gen 2 Glock 21 that I bought in 98. On my second (or third, I forget) mainspring, second trigger assembly.

She's never let me down, still shoots tight, and the fit of everything is still great. When the springs get too weak, I replace them, just as I do all my auto pistols.

By comparison my Ruger P95DC is on a similar level of round count. It's got it's third set of springs, but the slide/receiver fit is getting VERY loose on the Ruger. It may get retired at some point - it used to shoot great.. 10 years ago.. but everything on it is so damn loose now I'm lucky to put 6" groups together at 7 yards.

I'm not going to say I'm a "dedicated Glock fanboi" - I own one Glock out of two dozen handguns. I'm an equal opportunity plinker.

However, out of all those handguns, the Glock 21 lives on my nightstand, so there's something to say about that.

(Meanwhile, the Taurus 92 is my travelling companion..Love that damn "nickle plated sissy pistol")

How about Stevens double barrels, Savage 94,24, 110,Remington 700,s&w and colt da revolvers, win and rem pump shotguns and owl heads. Ruger mark sa pistols, security sixes etc, etc.

The Python is definitely a cult gun. If the thing had never been built and someone started making them no one would buy an overpriced big revolver that won't shoot as well as a 686 and readily goes out of time, with soft metal to boot.

The Glock is the standard by which others are judged. With 65% of hte LE market it's fact, not brag.

The only "cult" I can think of is the Moisin Nagant.

So many posters, (not to mention actual owners) claim this rifle as the penultimate do all be all for EVERY occasion. And I can't agree. Sorry.

P-7 is like Scientology to 'get converted' you need a lot of disposable income.

Call me an old believer' (Rastolniki to you Nagant lovers) but I won't own a plastic pistol.

Legendary = 1911, Luger

It always amazes that Glock fanboys (who are so annoying everyone knows) never bring up the Glock, but the haters then annoyingly flood a thread about how fanatical and annoying Glock fan boys are.

Glocks, 1911s, ARs and AKs are not cults. That would be like calling the Catholic Church a cult. No matter how cultish something may be once it saturates a market it no longer is a cult and becomes a major religion.

To me M1s are a legend that devolved into a cult. When something is justified by something a dead general said about it being state of the art 70 years ago and everyone nods their head, you are in cult territory.

Easily the 1911 guys.

Case in point the use of the word VERERABLE to not only describe JMB but an object designed by him.

VENERABLE

Accorded a great deal of respect, esp. because of age, wisdom, or character: "a venerable statesman".

What is a cult gun vs a legendary gun?

The real question for me is found when the two concepts intersect at one point-at that holy holy sanctuary of gun nut glorydom and mindless spiritual veneration of a tool made so well in mind and fact as to justfy the breathless assertation of the true believer that no matter what the consequence his devotion is complete and true for all time past present and future in similar scenarios and should anyone find fault with this conclusion it will forever fall on deaf ears.

Much time is devoted on thr to this topic in whole or part in almost endless varriation.

The 1911 is probably the pan-ultimate example of this for many; It has (no doubt) done legendary things--and those who worship at the altar of JMB will assert that it will forever be the king of the hill--traditional target shooting, combat, personal protection, concealed carry, elite unit sidearm, engraved art canvas, and on and on.

The fun thing is, if you put the steel to the ACTUAL test and said let's see the justification for your faith some weapons (like the aforemention 1911) still leave even the herectical disbelievers with jaws agape ~ and THEN the pedestal grows even taller.

My Pythons certainly shoot better than a 686. Your Pythons must be lemons. Do you actually have any Pythons?

To me legend and cult are rarely the same thing. A legend is a gun that has forever changed the way we do things. It will be recognized for the rest of time. A few that come to mind:
'94 Winchester
1911
Browning M2 (really? No one has mentioned this?)
Colt SAA
AK-47
Glock (like it or not, it made polymer acceptable)
M1 Garand

A cult gun is a gun that a select group of people will follow regardless of how good or bad the design actually is. A few that come to mind:
Glock
Hi-Point Carbine
1911
Ak-47 (and variants)
AR-15
Anything Kel-Tec (go look at the owners group if ya don't believe me)
M14/M1a
FAL
Colt SAA
Desert Eagle
Remington 700
Remington 870
Mossberg 500
Marlin 336
'94 Winchester
Mosin nagant
Mauser
10/22

These lists are in no way comprehensive

Legendary and cult at the same time?????
Browning M2 in use 1933 to present, 3 million manufactured
This has been the gun to call for heavy back up. It has been used for antiaircraft, antiship, as a tank mounted anti personnel, for sniping, main guns on fighter aircraft, strapped to an APC in between 106 recoiless rifles by the Marines to stop mass charges(Puff). It is currently in use by all five US Armed fources, it is in use by the US Border Patrol, it is in use by all nato Allies. It has been misused by most movie makers. It is the one gun that every ground pounder has depended on for backup when it hit the fan. It is too heavy to be easily carried or mounted, it is too vital to leave behind. To my father in WWII it was the BROWNING, to me it was THE 50, today it's MA DEUCE. Whatever it has been called, it has been like having John Wayne covering your back.
Browning Machine Gun .50 cal M2 All American

I think i see a pattern of "cult" gun in some ways is really a "fad" gun. The legendary guns such as Colt 1851 Navy Revolver ,Colt Army Model 1860 ,Colt Dragoon Revolver,Colt Walker ,Colt M1861 Navy ,Remington Model 1858 ,LeMat Revolver ,Sharps rifle ,Spencer rifle ,Henry rifle ,Springfield musket, 98 Mauser, 1878 Winchester and so on have achieved this lofty status because of historical perspective.."cult" guns and "fad" guns...not so much.

Gun Cults? Easily, number one, the 1911. Hands down. By far. Next would be the "AR 'platform'" (I don't have 'platforms' or 'systems'. I have guns ;) ) Glock clearly has a cult following.

More in the collecting world, it's Colt and Winchester. People go NUTS over Colt SAA's and Winchester 94's.

Just about any gun will have its "cult" following, but it seems to me that these are the biggest.
