Legislator Apologizes For Gun In Luggage
Dickinson Says He Made Mistake

POSTED: 11:39 a.m. EDT July 25, 2003

CONWAY, N.H. -- The New Hampshire legislator who had a loaded pistol in his carry-on luggage at Manchester Airport last week is apologizing to his constituents.

Republican Howard Dickinson, of Conway, said he made a stupid mistake. He said he didn't know the gun was in the luggage until the X-ray machine at the airport spotted it.

The longtime legislator said he's thought about resigning his seat, but many people have told him not to.

Dickinson has a permit to carry a concealed weapon in New Hampshire. He said he began carrying a gun decades ago after reading about the celebrated case in New York City where neighbors ignored pleas from a woman who was being murdered. He said he figured if he ever were in such a situation and had a gun, he could help.

Stupid perhaps. I don't know of the man. However , the reality is IF I did that, being just a lowly "subject" I'd get busted .

Since I'm not a politician, or member of the elite I'll not pull stupids...and I'll drive myself.

savage CA? eh winston?

MICHAEL SAVAGE FOR GOVERNOR OF CA

I listen to him quite a bit myself...how is he on guns though?
I've been thinking either Issa cause he bought it fair an square
or McClintock...I like McClintock the best

I thought the TSA was adopting a zero-tolerance policy after the cop's wife forgot the 'semi-automatic .357 magnum' in her carry on? But then there was the little girl with the gun in the teddy bear and now this clown. I'd like to see both of these cases prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Then maybe people would start waking up.

the full extent of the law

>But then there was the little girl with the gun in the teddy bear and now this clown. I'd like to see both of these cases prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Then maybe people would start waking up.

I would feel safer if the whole NH legislature could carry their guns on planes.
In the second case, would we be locking up the little girl or the Teddy bear? I admit that I won't feel any safer when all the Teddy bears are armed, but I'm not sure that we know who the responsible party is here.

SW, I was going to make the same point.

Around here, we have "must issue" and anybody who wants a CCW has it.
I carry at all time, the wife does whenever, the people I know do as suits them: a loaded firearm just isn't a big deal. (FWIW, the few times it isn't carried stong side, my weapon is in the truck, or the briefcase, or...)

So, forgetting a weapon, given you've a few, isn't any big deal to my mind.

Besides, which would you rather fly on?
A plane where everybody was "disarmed" by the TSA?
Or one where some, even many, most or all, are armed?

It's the "law" that wrong this time, as per usual these days.

What's the big deal?

If he'd really known he had the gun in his luggage he'd have checked it instead of letting them x-ray it as a carry-on.
The airlines stop all kinds of weapons every day: knives, knitting needles, key chains, squirt guns...
They should have just sent him back to the desk to check that particular bag.

The stupid mistake

was outlawing concealed carry in airplanes. I'm still astonished that the absurd tragedy of 9/11 didn't make more people understand that. But then the awesome idiocy of human beings always astonishes me.

Now we've put the TSA in charge, and we should all be ready for full even more warrantless full body cavity searches. :fire:

As someone who called this guy up and told him not to resign (well, left a message that he shouldn't resign) I could care less. I'd be very happy if the whole legistlature (600+ members) carried on planes...along with everyone else.

As it is, only 2/3 of the NH legistlature carries...*sniff*

He rarely talks about RKBA issues, so I don't know if he is for or against concealed carry. He has however discussed shooting his Glock and AR15.

The man should resign.. not for making a simple mistake, which we all agree shouldn't even be considered one.
But he should resign for not having a backbone and even suggesting that he should resign.
He did absolutely nothing wrong. period.
He shoud have said oops .. better put that in my CHECKED luggage and be a man. The fact that he should even have to think of resigning and giving in to irresponsible PC crap. ?? :cuss:

not sure how or why this was tossed in on this particular thread.

MICHAEL SAVAGE FOR GOVERNOR OF CA

however

I listen to him often. He is progun. He supports the use of firearms by all citizens, for self defense not just sporting or hunting. And have heard him state cases where a person carrying would have prevented a crime or death.
I've never heard him talk specifically on CCW.
But I know he has a strong progun stance.

He is also the only person in the media I have ever heard refer to the AWB
as the "so called assault weapons"
Implying that the term AW is even a liberal spin on reality.

He said he didn't know the gun was in the luggage until the X-ray machine at the airport spotted it.

Wonder how the gun got in the luggage in the first place? Did it jump in by it self?

If you are traveling by air (lord knows I hate doing that nowadays without even a small folding pocketknife) do you pack your own luggage or does someone do it for you? Do you leave your gun in the luggage from your last trip driving and close your eyes while you pack your socks and underwear? Who keeps their gun in their luggage???

Somethings rotten in NH.

Adios
