I'm trying to find out if the Tennessee Police Officers Association is legitimate or not and I'm not having any luck. Anyone out there have any suggestions on how to sort the fake from real, and the good from bad, charitable orgs?
 
If I wanted to check something like this out, I would go to the State Police, or Atorneys General office and ask them if they knew any thing about it.

But, untill I was sure they wouldn't get any thing from me.
 
Ask the caller for his full name, the police agency that he works for, his badge number, and his supervisor's name and telephone number. :)

If he gives you this information, look up his agency in the phone book, call the non-emergency, information telephone number, and ask to speak with him or his supervisor. :D

is the best possible advice. We have been contacted by phone on behalf of a number of organizations soliciting charitable donations for police and fire - particularly since 9/11. After checking, far and away the majority have been bogus. I was told by a local police agency that, if you are of a mind to donate, call the local PD and ask for the name of their particular charitable organization and pertinent details. Then you know that your donation is going to the right place. FWIW. Good shooting:)
 
Happened to me just this afternoon. Caller ID showed "unknown", lady on the line claimed to represent the Louisiana Fraternal Association of Police. Guess what - there ain't no such animal! Being LE myself, I had a few choice words for her before hanging up... :fire:
 
I don't support any LE charities. I'm close with a few cops, all are moderate-right to far-right, but they support liberal Democrats and a socialist mayor because of their pro-labor stance.
 
When it came time to renew our FOP dues...

..we got a call from the "fund raisers". I was all set to renew by phone, when a thought occured to me. I asked the guy where he was. He said, "West Virginia". Surprised, I said, "How much of my dues are you going to give The Kentucky FOP"? He proudly stated, "Up to 15%"! I replied, "No thanks, I'll DRIVE out to the local FOP Lodge and pay in person". "Up tp 15%"!! Sheesh!

Deputy Vaughn, if you e-mail me I will happily subscribe you to the NRA and the American Rifleman mag. for a year. I receive more calls from LEO orgs. asking for money than the NRA. I am serious about the NRA offer.
 
The question to ask is "What percentage of donations go to additional fundraising/overhead costs?" It is a known fact that many of these so-called charitable organizations donate less than 10-20% of their funds to the proclaimed recepiants.
 
rock jock, yup, sort of like our current welfare system! I think more money goes to those administrating it than to the needy.
 
Moutain Peak, thanks but NOthanks. I appreciate the offer but I got fed up with the NRA years ago. The DeputyVaughn fund was a joke. Not that I don't need the money......but I'll keep getting it the old fashioned way........ :banghead: :banghead: ...... working for it. :banghead: :banghead:

I solved my problem of solicitations for charities of all kinds. I simply told them I do all of my charitable giving through my church and my political giving to groups I support without their solicitation. Amazingly enough after a few times of that line on the phone they all quit calling.

DeputyVaughn, my offer was sincere and not based on the "DV fund" joke you made. I received your e-mail and responded. I respect your right to belong to(or not) any 2nd Amendment group you want to. I will send the NRA a $35.00 donation with DeputyVaughn listed on the "for" line. :) Same result for the NRA-less the mag. for you. :banghead:

I appreciate the thought, but if your going to donate on my behalf make it GOA. I do however hold you in high regard for your faithfulness to the 2nd Amendment Cause. :cool:
