A 7-year-old Leominster boy learned an important lesson during his spring vacation: Don’t play with daddy’s guns.

The boy accidentally fired his cop dad’s automatic handgun into the ceiling of the Leominster police station wounding no one, but causing a scare in the room. “We are very lucky nobody was injured,” Leominster police Chief Peter Roddy told the Worcester Telegram & Gazette.

The boy was visiting the station with his father, an off-duty cop who was not identified, last Thursday during school vacation, Roddy said. His father was showing off a new holster to three other police officers in a room inside the police station about 1:30 p.m.

He set the weapon, identified as a Sig Sauer P226, which can chamber a 9mm or .40-caliber round, on a table behind him when the boy grabbed the gun and fired.

Roddy told the paper that the boy’s father immediately scolded him, “You know better than that.”

The boy told his father he thought the gun was unloaded. He had watched his father go through a procedure clearing the gun, moments before he fired it. But, while the clip was out, one round was left in the chamber.

“The young boy touched the weapon when he shouldn’t have and it went off,” Roddy told the newspaper.

Roddy said an investigation was under way, but added the police officer was usually very safety conscious

It would seem that the father has some fault in this as well. Not sure why he would take the mag out of the gun, but leave a round in the chamber. Not exactly making the gun safe that is for sure.

The kid didn't "accidentally" fire the weapon. It fired when he pulled the trigger. Dad should be flogged for this

p. s. Where can i get me one of them "automatic handguns?"

IF my daughter accidently fire my gun, I'd still be waiting for my wife to raise enough money for bail, and I'm sure I'd have to find a good attorney to try and get my pistol permit back:fire:

It was worse in

a local paper's coverage, which babbled about a "bullet" being in the gun, which was a "service revolver."

If a civilian had been that stupid, his/her license would be revoked all his/her guns seized, and there would be a likelihood of child endangerment charges being brought.

My guess would be that he racked the slide, then dropped the mag absent mindedly after a long shift, eager to show off his holster to his buddies. People worry about magazine disconnects, but you see stories like this all the time, and never about someone getting shot during a reload because he had a mag disconnect. Not saying they're necessary, just saying they aren't as evil as they're made out to be...

So they are blaming a 7 year old for the stupidity of that father. Nice.

We obviously need more gun control in MA, because this kid just became another statistic. "Child gains access to unsecured handgun."

I worry about magazine disconnects because I might NEED to shoot while conducting a condition 1 reload. If the option is not there, I am dead. I have been shooting for 20 years now and have never had an ND. If people are having NDs the problem rests with them, not with myself or with the firearms.

Dang SIGs - just touch 'em and they go off!

Absolutely correct

"He should be happy he is a cop, if he were an average Joe he would have been charged with child endangerment +++"

Damn straight - AFTER the immediate revocation of his firearms license and the seizure of all his guns. :scrutiny:

If you follow the letter of the law, shouldn't the father be charged for leaving a firearm unattended as well as possible child endangerment?

Ehh, maybe were you live but not every Sheriff is out to get peoples guns like that.

The county I work in had a few break ins. A couple sons noticed their Dads house getting too much attention and decided to keep an eye out.

They laid in wait in the barn. Someone tossed a rock thru the back door glass and was attempting to gain entry when they stormed the guy. He ran and got into his vehicle.

The sons decided this would be a great time to unload both their shotguns at the guys vehicle.........

In alot of places you would expect some anti-gun drivel to come from the above situation.....the sheriffs statement was "you probably shouldnt do that".....thats all that was said.

Nah. You live in MA. Surely you know that laws only apply to the serfs, not to the ruling class.

Grasp the concept

"Ehh, maybe were you live but not every Sheriff is out to get peoples guns like that."

Since the story obviously comes from Massachusetts, the conditions of Massachusetts are the relevant ones; not yours.

Further, in Mass. sheriffs have NOTHING to do with firearms licensing. At all. Period. Their only functions are running the county jails and serving / enforcing process.

Someone else who is absolutely ignorant of Massachusetts law lecturing the forum about it. Are you a friend of Hawkmoon?
