Dear Mr President,
I am writing to you to ask that you discontinue your pursuit of further firearms legislation, including the re-enactment of any form of the failed 1994 Assault Weapons Ban. As a retired police officer, I stand with the vast majority of those in my profession who support every part of the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights including the right of the American people to keep and bear arms.
As any law-abiding American was, so too, were law-abiding gun-owners horrified beyond words at the tragic loss of 26 innocent lives on 14 December 2012 at Sandy Hook elementary school. However, the answer to the problem is not to further diminish the rights of law-abiding American citizens, but rather to encourage, support, and increase those God-given rights, allowing them to exercise their human right of self-protection.
In closing, I urge you to bring to a halt and stop pursuing any further restrictions of law-abiding American citizen's right to keep and bear arms, refrain from re-enacting the failed 1994 Assault Weapons Ban in any form, and to join the NRA in the implementation of the National School Safety Shield program in order to afford my children the same professional, competent, armed security that your children enjoy as they sit in their schools.
