I finally found a practical use for the “pre-ban” Colt HBAR flat top I purchased in 1996. I saw a lot of coyotes while deer hunting up on the ridge behind my house last month and I'm going to thin them out a little. In the past I've shot it with the carry handle sights so I know it's a tack driver. Unfortunately my eyes no longer work that well so I'm mounting a Leupold 3.5-10x50mm on it. Has anyone done this? If so, how high is your scope off of the picatinny rail and how visible is the front sight on the scope’s low power? I’m thinking of using a Millett M4 extended riser (+0.625”) and high (+0.75”) or super high (+1.00”) rings. Any input or advice would be welcome. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your input. I thought about buying another flat top upper with a removable front sight but I do not want to sink that much money into this project. This coyote thinning exercise is just going to be temporary.
Another option would be to mount the scope on the carry handle but I always though that looked silly.

Not only would it look silly, your "cheek weld" would be minimal and your neck craning would be maximal. Try using "extra-high/tall" rings on your flat-top and see if the scope gets high enough to afford you a natural sight picture. If the scope still needs to get higher (and I prefer them mounted as low as is practical), you can add extension blocks to the mix. Barring extreme circumstances, I wouldn't be too concerned about the irons interfering with your sight image.
With a scope that is 3x or more you will NOT see the front sight - ever.
Mount your scope as low or high as is ergonomically correct for you.
Its just plan not a problem with the magnification you are talking about.
