Leupold scope

I bought a used Leupold VariX-3 2.5 x 8 The power adjustment is marked 2.5 to 8 power, and on the eyepiece side is marked 2-8 yrds/m. Can someone explain the purpose of the second (yds./m) scale?

I would say that means the minimum distance to use it would be no less than 2 -8 yards.

It is a range finder as such. IIRC as you turn the power ring up you can tell the yardage to the target by bracketing the target with the cross hairs. For example, if the target fits in between the points on the cross hairs @ 6x, you can tell the distance to the target by the scale on other side of the power ring in 200 to 800 yds. Very easy to show anyone with a hands on, but tough to describe
on line.

A crude rangefinder. Joe described it's use about as well as I could. I simply ignore it.

Never occured to me! I thought the heavy crosshairs where closer to the fine cross hairs than I am used to! I assume it is for deer sized critters. Of course, my Leupold laser range finder is real accurate. Thanks for ya'lls prompt attention to my request.

I'm not even sure if they had civilian laser range finders when Leupold came up with this system. It was crude at best, but better than nothing at all.
