Hi:

I am thinking of getting one of these scopes to use on both an M4 carbine and a Ruger 10/22.

It's either one of these in 3-9x33mm, or I'll get something else in 4-12x40mm.

Any reason why these scopes can't work on both types of rifle?

I am quite new to using/choosing scopes, so thanks for comments!

Works great on my 10/22

Leupold makes true .22 rimfire scopes that will have parallax adjusted for the more typical close range .22's are shot at.

Either that, or they will have adjustable AO (adjustable objective) so you can set the parallax & focus exactly for the range you are shooting.

Either might be a better choice then a high-power scope with a fixed longer range parallax setting.
