lever action half cock safety

Our new Henry Golden Boy 22 lever action manual describes how to engage the safety by pulling the hammer back all the way to the firing position and then holding it with thumb and releasing the trigger, then setting the hammer at the "half cocked" position. I notice that if I just pull the hammer back a little past the "half cocked" position and let it settle into the safety position, it seems to be in safe mode. Does anyone know if there is a problem setting the safety in this way?

If it's like other lever actions, that should be OK.

BUT, with the chamber empty and rifle pointed in a safe direction, test it by pushing on the back of the hammer to see if it slips. It may be that the Henry requires you to do it as described in the manual to fully seat the sear in the half-cock notch.

... also test it by pulling the trigger. Always remember that a "safety" isn't always safe, it is a mechanical device that can fail. The 4 Rules are the only safety that works flawlessly if followed 100% of the time.
