Lever Action Rifle in 7.62 x 39

its very close to the .30-30 its not a good caliber choice since it uses a pointed bullet and is rimless

pointed bullets is a no-no in tube fed mags

There are how ever a few well thought of Boltaction models. CZ's comes immediately to mind.

CZ's bolt gun is the "lever gun of 7.62x39" I think.:)

Don't worry, 7.62x39 won't be cheap for long. I'd put money on an ammo import ban sometime in the next year. I wouldn't buy a gun in the caliber, under the assumption that it will remain cheap.

The 7.62mmx39 is rimless and has a spitzer bullet so I believe there are no lever-action guns chambered for this round. 30-30 has similar ballistics to 7.62x39 anyway.

Makes sense... bad for primers. I have long considered the CZ 527 Carbine in 7.62x39.

Could be... but I have enough of the stuff laying around to last a couple of decades from a bolty/lever gun. I assume that even if such a ban was put forth, it would sprout some discount-grade domestic stuff to pop up. Think Winchester White Box... not as cheap as the Rooski stuff, but still feeds the beast.

KBintheSLC...I have never seen a lever 7.62x39 but I would not bet there isn't one out there. The Savage 99 and Browning lever rifles chamber and fire pointed rimless cartridges. A Savage 99 in 250-3000 would be about the same size of the 7.62x39. I'm sure with all the talented gunsmiths in this country a quick rebarrel along with other minor modifications and the 7.62x39 could become a reality.

I'm also sure those who worship the grand old Savage 99 would like to get their hands around my neck right now for even suggesting to bubba one up! :p

The only way I could see this working is if it is in an action like the Browning BLR or Savage 99's because of their magazines.

But I would still rather have it 30-30 due to the better choice of hunting ammo.

The fact that it is rimless is a non-issue. Marlin has been chambering the 336 in .35 Rem for over 50 years and they function just fine.

It could be done using the rubber tipped bullets Hornady has introduced, but I do not see any advantages to using it instead of a 30-30 or even the new 308 Marlin with the rubber tipped bullets.

jmr correct but there were a number of design issues at first i read trying to make a tube fed lever feed the rimless cartridge they had to make a few changes to make it work right

it could be done but does a company really want to count on everyone useing ballistic tipped bullets when there is a large supply of fmj and sp ammo

Why not just build it to take cheap, available AK-mags? Wouldn't be the first time a lever gun used a detachable magazine.

I just don't think any factory will take the risk of chambering a lever gun in a round with a lot of pointed bullets out there. Too big of a chance for some FMJ to get tossed in and have a primer go off. I wouldn't doubt some custom pieces were made but I have a bit of trouble seeing anything mass produced in x39.

Why does (almost) everyone in the thread assume that rimless spitzer cartridges don't go in leverguns? They've been doing it since 1895:

Ironically, the 7.62x39mm's military predecessor, the 7.62x54mm was also a chambering of the 1895. The x54 is rimmed, but the 30-40 Krag and later 30-06 sure weren't.

Then there's the Savage 99 and BLR as mentioned, and Ruger makes several mag-fed leverguns. Oh, and the old Marlin Levermatic was for the spitzer .256 Winchester.

matt most common levers are tube fed there are eception (1895 savage and some others) there would be zero issues with and 1895 other than the fact that they are somewhat rare and new ones are a tad expensive

I suppose Hornady could make leverevolution ammo in x39 that could tube feed, or someone could make a 2 shot levergun. But that won't happen because so few would buy it. I'd like to see a 6lb (leaves out 99 Savage) levergun in .250-3000 with leverevolution ammo, but that won't happen either. Wait I know!!! 6.8spc in that 6lb levergun!
