Is anyone making a lever action shotgun these days ?

I'd like one in 20ga but 12ga would be OK too.

Both Winchester & Marlin have made lever-action .410's recently and there are a lot of them to be found on the auction sites.
Cabala's apparently has a warehouse full of Marlins, as they have them in sale flyer's every 6 months or so.

The only other current one is the Puma 87 imported by Legacy Sports, and is a Chinese replica of the Winchester 1887. It is only made in 12 ga.

I don't know of any lever-action shotgun ever made in 20 ga.

I saw a dealer with three Winchester Model 94 .410s at the last gun show, but there didn't seem to be much interest.

There is a very good reason they haven't made lever-action shotguns since 1901, until recently.

They ain't all that great when compared to a good pump or semi-auto.
They were rendered obsolete by the Winchester 1897 pump and Browning 1902 A-5 semi-auto.

The Puma branded Legacy Sports '87 replicas are high quality guns made by Chiappa/Armi Sport in Italy, easily twice the gun that the Chinese '87 replicas are.
Two barrel lengths, 12 gauge only.

I have a friend who'll likely purchase a Norinco 1887 Winchester since he keeps talking about how "neat" it would be to own a lever-action shotgun. Personally I have zero interest in such a thing, but I can understand the appeal for new toys.

I did fairly recently purchase a 1897 Winchester made by Norinco and I'm very pleased with the quality.

Chiappa is also making a 1887 so you can look into that too.

Heard some issues with the Noricos handling slugs, but that's entirely hearsay, so take it as you will.

The Chiappa 87 I tried shot slugs low at 50 yards.
Otherwise, no problems with them.

I recall seeing a single shot lever action being sold back in the 60's. I think they were made by Ithaca, and there must be some used ones around.

Other than looking cool, no much advantage over a break open single IMO.

Was the slug issue model specific or Norincos in general?

My Norinco (1897 model) seems to handle all buckshot and birdshot wonderfully.
It patterns beautifully with #4 buck.

But it also handles slugs wonderfully well too (striking COM out to 25 yards, the furthest I've lobbed them with this particular shotgun).

I've got one of the Chinese guns and it's a hoot to shoot. The day I got it I took it to a skeet shoot and folks stood in line to shoot it. When we ran out of 12ga ammo, one of the guys went home and brought back more. I'd really like to see one of the Italian made guns.

Where do you get an Australian 1887 copy?
I read a lot about them several years ago but never saw a real gun.

Nearly all the Chinese copies are being shot with smokeless, I doubt the importers would take a chance if they wouldn't stand it better than originals. The Italian ones will have had to pass proof test with smokeless.

Bought our son one of those Norinco 1887's a couple years back. He thought it looked neat. It is a little unusual to load as you open the action and slide the rounds in under the barrel. His gun gives you a pretty good thump on the shoulder with buckshot loads. It's just something a little different. I prefer my Stoeger coach gun instead.
