wow libyan rebels have FAL's? wonder where those might have come from? i feel quite certain that the taliban probably had an influx of M4's and SCAR's once upon a time! gotta love indigenous overthrow support!
Seems pretty unlikely, most of the conversion work on Enfields was done with No. 1 MK 3's from Ishapore, if I remember right. If it was firing a modern unrimmed cartridge it would probably have a redesigned mag.
I guess they just have a bunch of crates of old .303 sitting around. God knows what kind of condition that's all in.
Remember, that the UK, France, Germany and the Ottoman's have been in Africa, especially North Africa for a very long time. There is no telling what kind of firearms you will find over there. Especially now in this swell of rebellions.
Those old Enfields certainly shouldn't be dismissed. The US gave a ton of them to mujahideen fighters during the Soviet-Afghan War. The Afghans apparently really liked them as they often had greater reach than the AKs used by the Soviets/Communist Afghan troops and were capable of piercing the Soviet body armor of the period.
As others have already noted, north Africa saw a great deal fo fighting in World War II and I'm sure there are some pretty hefty stockpiles of surplus rifles and ammo remaining there.
We gave Enfields to the muj in Afghanistan before we got serious and started buying boatloads of AKs and ammo for them. Most anyone who could ditch an Enfield for an AK did so as soon as they could.
