I want to put a light on my AR but can't quite decide between getting a light or a green laser designator. Primary use would be home defense but if I get the opportunity to coyote hunt I most surely would. Price is a concern as it always is with me. I need to stay under $100. There are many light options in that price range but not so much for a decent laser designator. I have used a red filter on a scope mounted light in the past and would like that kind of versatility in a tactical light. A strobe function would be a plus but not absolutely necessary. Anybody have some experience with any such lights or lasers? Recommendations?

Get a good light.

You can't buy any type of laser sight or laser designator worth messing with for $100 bucks.

He said it, case closed.

For your light, I'll give you a tip. Look for Surefire lights on CL, other online postings. Lots of soldiers get their own stuff cheap and when they get out they just try and unload it.

I get stuff like that all the time, but I'm near an infantry post.

Light OR laser?

I got both when I scored a used Surefire X400. Bright light and a 5mW red laser in one package.

BSW.

I got the green laser designator (ND3) back when I was doing predator control over the orchard and chicken coops. It works great but when the temps drop down below 30 degrees, the laser stops working. crap!

You might also try UTG flashlights. I have the EL-337. It's big, & maybe even a little heavy on my AR, but it's 200 lumens & really lights up the night; good for night hog hunting. I also bought the filter kit for it, comes with red, green, blue, amber & clear. Got the light from Optics Planet for $60. It comes with a remote pressure switch & rail mount body. The light has a momentary off/on button or twist for on/off, but you can buy a push-button off/on switch also. UTG offers smaller lights also, but I got this one with hog hunting in mind, & I don't mind the extra weight.
