Lightweight hunting rifles

One thing about a Kimber 8400M, I suppose similar to the model 7, they are designed to be lighter, posessing minimal dimension of the receiver, bolt, and the barrel contour. However the Kimber in many instances retains the 24" barrel where other rifles go to 22". But because of the rifle's diminutive nature it is still lighter than many 22" rifles.

I do not count my H&R Handi-Rifle in .223, but I will count my Rem Model7 in 7-08 with a compact 6X fixed scope

That’s a great looking Remington. I’ve always liked the Manlicher stocks! I had a Ruger #1 full Manlicher but couldn’t make it shoot for beans, so it had to go.

This one's surprising accurate (for what it is) barrel is free floated and I've got a couple loads 225 Sierra and Nolser that are 1MOA to just under for 3 rounds. I wish I could get my boy's MOD7 in .260 to group as well. I'm about to drop it in a new stock to see if it will improve.

View attachment 817517 View attachment 817516 Who has a lightweight or ultra lightweight hunting rifle? I thought it would be interesting to see the variations in models and actions. I would also find it interesting as to why you bought it, a special need, trip or maybe you just liked it?

I’ll get us kicked off.

I bought my Remington LSS Mountain rifle in the early 1990’s to hunt the Appalachian Mountains in several states. It weighs 7 lb 2 oz as shown and the .260 chambering has performed very well. I’ve taken a few deer with it and I really like the light recoil and accuracy. I’m sure there are rifles out there now that are much lighter. What say you!

If I had a Nickel for every time I said that I was goin' to get a LSS Mountain Rifle in .260 Rem...

Still kick myself for that.

My current "lightweight" Rifle:

RUGER 77/357 w/ a Leupold VX-I 2-7x33 in Med. ht. rings.

This one weighs about 94 lbs, and takes about 30 seconds to load, but it launches a 21,000 gram steel bullet 200 fps lol

My lightest gun is a flintlock fusil-de-chasse. It is 66 caliber with a 44 inch barrel. Only weighs 6 1/4 pounds. You would never guess it is that light by looking at it. The solid steel recoil pad makes it a pleasure to shot.

the lightest rifle i have now (other then my cz carbine) is my 1904 german 98 sporter, it's about 6 pounds, i only shoot the ppu ammo in it for my sake and the stocks.

I can't tell a lot of difference in a light contour barrel and a heavy contour barrel for 2 moa accuracy, which is about all anyone needs to kill anything at point blank range. The light contour barrels won't hold a 5 shot group like a heavy barrel will but that isn't their purpose. Should be one and done on game. Anyone who's F'd that up more than once should probably stick to shooting paper.

I know, I just destroyed the concept of LRP hunting and a whole new marketing strategy. Sue me.

Several years ago, back when I could get around in the woods on foot, I built a lightweight rifle for deer. Its a Remington Model 700 in a Brown Precision stock, a lightweight Douglas barrel and a Jewell trigger. The caliber is 308 Winchester and it weighs 6-1/2 pounds. I've killed a Semi Truck full of deer with it. I doesn't shoot as well as I hoped, being so light it bounces off of the rest at every shot. My pet load groups right around an inch for 5 shots but the poi never changes, even if I take it out of the stock and put it back.

Now that I don't hunt-n-stalk anymore I plan to rebuild in into something heavier and easier to shoot. Probably an HS Precision stock and a short (20 inch) Krieger varmint weight barrel, probably fluted.

My walking varmint rifle is a Remington Model 600 in 223. This is for when I'm calling Coyotes and Bobcats.
