I'm looking at buying a light MSR in .308. The models I'm looking at are the Roam R-10 Red River Ultralight, the POF Revolution DI and piston models. The Springfield Saint, the Tavor and the Scar 17. I would also consider the POF Rogue and the Barrett REC10 Carbine if I could find any.

I did look at the Daniel Defense DDM5 and it looks too heavy. I really want to keep under 8 lbs and preferably a lit lighter than that.

Speaking about weight. Roam has a recoil-reducing buffer and any light rifle I get will have a muzzle break.

So far I have a line on the Roam, the POFs and I'm fairly sure I can find a Saint, Tavor or Scar if I looked hard enough.

My major needs apart from light weight are reliability and hunting accuracy. A couple MOA is ok, but the more accurate the better. Please choose several answers in the poll if you are picking a model that it not ontainable.

What would you recommend and why ?

Build your own.

From what I understand these companies have gone through extensive engineering to get rifles that function reliably and are durable for their light weight. If I was to build my own I would just be buying their parts and reassembling them. Am I missing something here ?

You can make exactly what you want, not every rifle has everything one may like.

Well, If I was going to do that I would get the POF and use the Roam buffer tube (which they sell separately). However, POF has done some engineering on their buffer tube so I do not know what effect the Roam buffer would have. The attraction for the Roam buffer is that it reduces recoil. I will prolly further modify the end rifle by adding a Magpul recoil pad for example.

I will eventually but, in the meantime, I like my DPMS Recon a bunch. It shoots so good. I have come to hate the handguards though as they scratch up any rifle anywhere near it in the safe and serve no real purpose for me. I can't wait to build a new .308 MSR though. 5.56 first though.
