Leupold has a $100 off sale and I'm thinking of trying one of the fire dot scopes, I'm looking at the vx-3hd 3.5-10x40 which is $599 with the sale. I'd kinda like the 50mm for the better light gathering but don't think I can afford it and I like a lower scope. It's the same price for the 3-9x50 freedom firedot but for the same money I'd rather have the 40mm and the vz3 over the 50mm freedom.

So you guys like the fire dot and do you think it's worth it, I like a 30mm tube scope so that's a plus for me tho I'd have to get a new set of talley lightweights for the model70. We can now hunt 30 minutes before and after the sun here so I'm thinking the firedot would be nice. If this m70 shoots good it maybe my go to work rifle so trying to get the best scope I can with good eye relief and not to heavy. Thanks.

I have a 3x9x50 freedom and a older vx6 2x10x42 both with firedot. I believe you will be happy with the vx3hd with the 30mm tube. The 30mm tube really helps with light gathering. And yes I do believe the firedot is worth it.

I've got one of the VX-5HD with the fire dot duplex reticle, and it's super cool. Of course, I haven't used the rifle in any low light situations while hunting yet, so I can't say how effective it is or whether it was worth the extra money...

But I like it! I've become a big fan of all the VX series HD scopes.

How big is the dot at about 100 yards and is it day light bright, not that you need it in the day.

The dot is not big at all -- this is nothing like a red dot sight with something like a 2MOA dot. The dot seems pretty much is the size of the intersection of the crosshairs (it's that small), and it's exceptionally clear, visible in bright sunshine but not at all fuzzy. Like I said, I haven't needed it in low light, but it's just a cool feature. I know a couple guys who've tried the firedot reticles and then gone back to normal duplex reticles saying they didn't need the firedot, but then there's a lot of positive reviews out there on these scopes.

I've yet to look through one since shops always have the battery out, I've got an astigmatism and wonder if that would blow up the dot or get the horseshoe I see sometimes.

All I hunt with is Leupold VX-R Firedot ,Firedot 4 reticle which is a German 3 post reticle with a shake awake dot.Would not hunt with anything else and have the same 3-9x40 on every gun I hunt with.Slug gun, muzzleloader and PA deer rifles.I have a astigmatism and not a problem.Set dot on low when going out in am and as this lighted up in am increase dot intensity, opposite at afternoon hunts.Light intensity adjustment goes up and down but must go all the way up or down to start returning the other way.Perfect for hunting ,never a miss with them.It draws your attention to center of reticle.

I picked up the vx-3hd 3.5-10x40 firedot and I'm liking it very much.
