Trying to find out who ever got a S&W 500 only to find out you don't like it. I would like to keep this to those who have shot it with any degree of regularity. Trying to exclude those who shot 5 rnds and threw it back to the dealer because it was a little too much to handle, but fair being fair I'll include those also. I have three and enjoy everyone. Have shot many hundreds of rnds thru my 8 3/8". I've read lots of commentary on how anyone could need, use or like them. I say, once you learn what they are all about, there the "bee's knee's". I'd also like to state that I do not shoot this large weapon to make up for inadaquate(spell) body parts. That's what I drive a big 4X4 for.

I like my 8 3/8 500 just fine with about 300 rounds (not all at once) through it. Great shooting gun with a fantastic trigger for such a cannon. Guess S&W didn't want you to know when it was going so you wouldn't flinch. -Don

At 6'4" & 280# don't really need to make up for inadquacies either. Do have that 4X4 though. :)

I have 240 rounds through mine, a particolored 10 1/2 (12)" PC M500. Most have been commercial ammunition (350, & 500 grain), some have been 475 grain 50-70 bullets swaged down, hollow pointed, and loaded to about 1100 fps.. I'll eventually shorten it to 6 1/2 (6 3/4)", decomp it, and change the lug to the classic S&W half lug configuration (it just doesn't point like a Smith). I'll also blue the cylinder and yoke. But first I want to see what it will do configured the way it is using bullets from some moulds I've ordered. FWIW, I don't find it to be a beast to shoot, though it does take much more concentration to shoot well than say a 44 Magnum. FWIW, at this point I'd no more shoot a hundred cartridges in a single session with this revolver than I'd shoot a hundred cartridges from a rifle chambered in 500 Nitro in a single afternoon. I learned that lesson many years ago.

The smile on my wife's face as she fired her first five shots from this revolver just got bigger and bigger. We've had 32 years together to learn to enjoy each others "bad" habits. I do wish I'd had the camera.

I have one of the 6 1/2" PC Hunters. I shoot it with full power ammo occasionally, but mostly I shoot it with lighter loads. I see no reason to beat myself up. It is a lot of fun to shoot with lighter loads. I load lead 325 and 375 gr. bullets to 1000 fps.

My 4 inch .500 is a constant companion from about May 1st through November (factory Hornady 500gr jfp at 1180fps). Strictly as a grizzly stopper for shots at about 10yards or less.

The rest of the year while the big guys are sleeping its usually my Glock 21 in .45acp as cat repellent.

Man I love this country up here but you are definately back in the food chain.

Great shooting gun with a fantastic trigger for such a cannon.
I noticed that too, on the one occasion when I handled (not fired) a .500. Sweet trigger.

Wish my new-production Model 10 (itself an excellent gun) had come with that action. :scrutiny: Instead I paid a gunsmith to get it.

Well so far it's been as I suspected. Everyone enjoying a fine piece of engineering. In my best estimation, the X frame is going to go down as one of the best big bore handguns ever made. Time will tell, but so far so good.

I am on my fourth 500 Mag. I currently own two. I had 2 of the 8 3/8 inch models and sold both of them, one to my best friend. I have had a BFR in 500 mag when they beat S&W out on the market with them. I still have that BFR in 500 Mag, I have over 3000 rounds fired through it, I have also sent in to Mag-na-port and had them cut the barrel down to 6 inches and do a 4 port to the barrel. The gun shoots like a dream. I took a black bear last year in Maine with it, one shot with a 370 gr. cast bullet. I bought a S&W 4 inch 500 Mag when they came out, and still have that gun also. It is my back up gun. I have been shooting the 500 Mag form day one and love the round. I have fired over 4000 rounds in all of my 500 Mags. Good thing I reload. The 500 Mag is an awesome round and ranks up there with my three 460 Mags. :D

I've got a 4 inch and I've put 600 rounds through it. I really like the gun, but there are some differences between it and any other S&W I've owned. I had to send it back to S&W once when the trigger return spring broke, and I've had to make sure to keep the screw that retains the crane tightened. I think this is primarily due to the recoil.

I'd say of the 600 rounds I've put through it 200 have been the Hornady 350 XTP's, 60 have been corbon 440 hardcast, and the remaining 340 have been reloads. I find that I enjoy shooting my reloads the most. :)

It's definately a fun gun to shoot, very accurate and I don't ever intend to get rid of it. The downside to it is the "size". I haven't bought a holster for it yet because I'm not sure if I'll end up carrying it or not. I've got a Ruger Redhawk Alaskan that seems much more "carryable" but doesn't have the punch. I guess I've got time though because the grizzlies haven't migrated to central Illinois yet. :)

Have a good one,
Dave

Holy crap, Redhawk1! Did you just say the 500 was your backup gun? You carry that thing in an ankle holster? :D

clintpup, no I just put it in my front pocket. ;) It is not that bad to carry in a shoulder rig. Also makes a great tent gun. :D

Let me think. Yes...I've shot exactly ONE round of s&w 500. My comment...impressive!.

I was at the range and the shooter next lane over gave me a chance with his. I'm not likely to ever buy one, but, they are impressive.
