I decided to try out one of these new Barrel De-Resonators from Limbsaver. I had heard from several of my customers that they work great. Those that have tried them have them on several of their rifles if not all of them.

Well, I tried one.
I'm impressed.

Lots of photos so I didn't post it all here... so here is the link.

Have you guys tried it out? What is your take?

So after tuning it for the "crappy ammo" did it shoot all other ammo types better, worse, or the same?

I use them on all my long barrel soda straws and they work great! Usually run 2-4 inches from the muzzle. The one on a 24" Model 700 .223 that has been turned to a soda STRAW with flutes really brought groups with 55 grain ball from almost 2" to 3/8" !:what:

I've never tried this funky looking and inexpensive thing, but you got me looking at reviews all over the net.

Surprise, surprise- the folks who are slamming it haven't even tried it and probably never will, and the vast majority of those that do seem to be pleasantly surprised and impressed with the results they are getting.

Looking at customer reviews, it's seeming like the few negatives are likely from those who don't bother to follow instructions and adjust its position to find its "sweet spot" for their gun.

Thanks for the detailed review!

rockstar.esq - No, I didn't try my good ammo with it. I'm getting low on my Hornady 162 grain and I didn't want to break open my last box of Fusion loads.
But if it can do this with cheap ammo - results with better ammo should be about the same or better.

I've seen them advertised but never bought one. I know when cutting brake drums on a lathe we put something resembling that grommet tight on the drum to make cuts cleaner. when I doubted the results and took off the rubber band the drums came out awful  maybe same thing for gun barrels

Seem to hold up just fine when the barrel gets hot. Once in position, it isn't so easy to move as to worry about knocking it out of position.

I'm afraid I'm not going to be taking this one off any time soon.

This isn't a miracle / snake-oil type product... this really does do what it advertises.
It doesn't change the guns point of aim/point of impact so you wont have to rezero it. (but even if you did, it would still be worth it)

No, Limbsaver did not send me one to review, I do not work for them... I purchased this one over the counter for my own use. I'm going to be buying another one shortly.

I've been eyeing them for a while now myself. I'm about to assemble a Savage MKII heavy barrel .22 into a new stock. I'll be bedding it, installing a bug hole tuner, etc. It was a tackdriver from the factory, but I figure better bedding and a more stable stock should reduce the groups somewhat. I'll be trying the de-resonator just to see if there's any improvement possible on a gun that's already pretty well tuned. It's about 4 guns down my list of to-do's but I'll definately post my results here and rimfire central.

Now the Mini-14, that's an idea! If there's a single gun out there that can benefit from reduced barrel harmonics, it's the Mini. If anyone has tried that, let us know!

I want one...

De-resonators have been used to great effect in the rimfire arena, particularly by the bench rest crowd. At least that is my understanding after poking around the net...
