Limited to One Handgun

If it has to do it all, and I cannot escape the country, then I'd go with a revolver in 44 Magnum with 4" barrel and boot grips. I would use hot 44 Special for defense and various 44 Magnum loads for other tasks. An alternative would be to go with a Glock 21 or 1911 and a 460 Rowland conversion.

You must be from seven shot New York city. I understand. Oh, the rest of the world hasn't heard of the .44, let alone carry/support it.

Limited to one handgun or rifle thread...Why?!!? I live in America. Presently I don't have that problem. And I really don't care how it is in other countries.

Perhaps it's because this is the World Wide Web and not the United States of America Web.
While you may think highly of yourself, others do not, nor care what country your a resident of..

Answer the question or move along.. It's that simple

I think if I was limited to one handgun, it would depend on ammo availability. If the local autoloader ammo, like 9mm, was not reliable, I would probably go for a 3 or 4 inch barreled stainless 38/357. If there was a good source of 9mm ammo I would go for a Glock 19. I am sure Sigs and S&W M&P's are not as common around the world as they are here.

A Colt Government in .38 Super with a 9mm. barrel assembly, a .22LR coversion kit, and lots of ammo and magazines for all three calibers.

I would get a .357 of some sort.

If carry/CCW is the primary consideration then I would go with the SP-101, 3" barrel. If not, most any duty-sized .357 with a 4" barrel would be fine.

I'm glad that I live in a country that still allows you to own more than one handgun or firearm. Only one.... probably a 4" Colt Diamonback 22LR or 4" SW Model 18 (or 4" 617). The Diamondback was my first serious handgun and still remains my favorite. I'll make do with the self defense usage and associated arguments pro and con.

sig p226 in .357 sig with a .40 S&W barrel. Night sights and a tac rail., oh I do have one of those, ok I'm good.

In some foreign countries, you are limited to one handgun for self defense. You can carry that handgun, keep at home for protection, and shoot it at the range, but you are limited to one handgun.

What handgun would you choose when limited to one?

I'll stay in Texas, thanks.

The one gun I carry most is a Kel Tec P11, but I'm in my revolver mood lately and have been totin' my Taurus 85SSUL. Between those I guess, as to which I'd toss if I had to. I just hope I never have to.

I am from South Africa. And yes, the laws are strict and much more of a slep now than it has been in the past. But any person can own 2 handguns. One for SD and one for sport shooting. That is my situation. I own a .22LR pistol for sport shooting and a 9mm for SD. You may only own 200 rounds of ammo for each firearm you own. For my SD pistol, I'm fine with that. For my sport .22, it sucks. You do need more than 200 rounds per weekend as 200 shots are done in half of the afternoon, what then, you must go home with a empty gun..

But you can if you want apply for what they call dedicated status, then you may get as many firearms as you want and can motivate. I am busy with that and will get a G34 also for sport shooting. Then I'm done, it is all the handguns I could ever need.

To the OP. I don't know if you will carry daily. So I don't know if you want a smaller gun. But I would go for a G19 if I'm you.

I've limited myself to one caliber for years, the .357 Magnum. I have not limited myself to one .357 Magnum revolver though. If I had to limit myself to one revolver it would be a Smith and Wesson M-586 with a 4" barrel.

I can't resist these "only 1 gun" threads, even though they pop up about every week or 2. But my answer changes all the time, so here are my 2 contenders this week:

Either a Ruger GP100 4" Stainless, or some kind of .45ACP semi-auto with a rail and night sights. The semi-auto choice would come down to either a stainless 1911 Government, Sig P220, or a polymer striker-fired high-capacity gun like the M&P45, XD45, or Glock 21SF.

If I chose the .45, I'd have additional extra-power mag and recoil springs for heavy hardcast loads from Buffalo Bore, if the gun is going out in the wilderness.

This week, I guess I'm leaning toward the .45 semi-auto.

Provided ammo could be found G20. I have two Gen 4s and given choice would not want anything else.

200 rounds would really suck especially with 22LR. One bulk pack here is more than 200 rounds as a comparision. I wouldn't be surprised that some powers in the USA would like a similar requirement. Regulate ammunition sales and you control the majority of the guns.

I suspect once you get the "dedicated" status and pick up a Glock you'll want a few more just in case. I would want one to hunt with personally. That like archery hunting is one of the ultimate sporting challenges.
