Link question for 1911Tuner

Howdy tuner,

I have a quick question about elongating 1911 links for you. I followed your instructions on m1911.org on how to elongate the link to get rid of stem bind. I had to elongate the link by about .006" to get it to stop/reduce riding in the link. This is the most amount of material that you recommended removing there, but in some of the posts here you say no more then .003" of material to be removed.

I have concerns about putting a shorter link in though because if i do, When the pistol goes into lockup, i will probably bind on the lower barrel lug. In otherwords there is no standing on the link at the moment and very little room for a shorter link against the lower lug in lockup.

Well anyway i got rid of most of my riding the link condition, there is no standing on the link, but i had to elongate the link more then is recommended.

So the question is, will elongating the hole by .006" be a problem or should i just get a shorter link? (the link that was modified was the standard .278")

Sorry for the long explanation for a very quick question but i figure more info is usually better then too little.

Hey hey!

.006 inch probably won't hurt anything. I cautioned about going more than .003 mainly to keep somebody from figgerin' that if a little is good, that a lot must be gooder, and really hog it out. The area to be really careful is in the bottom of the hole. Unlock/Linkdown gets delayed and can cause some expensive problems.

A shorter link will advance the beginning of the unlock timing sequence...which usually isn't good. It can also prevent unlocking completely...which is even worse. Now that the barrel isn't riding or standing on the link...is there any vertical barrel movement when you push down on the hood with the gun in battery? If not...you've got it about as good as it's gonna get. Still okay as long as there isn't more than about .003 inch of play...but you can expect the gun to string shots vertically a little.

update

I checked to see if there is any barrel springing in lockup but i can't seem to find any perceptable springing. I'll take a more thorough look when the pistol is fully back together, but all seems like it is good to go.
