There are some things I miss about city life, but not too many.

My oldest son is 13. He just started his first year of teen league baseball, (the next step after little league, 13-14 yo kids, first league on a 90' diamond)

As anyone who has kids involved in anything knows, fundraisers are a never ending thing. Hoagies, popcorn, candy, garden bulbs, candles, more hoagies, ....

So anyway, he has his first practice tonight and he brings home his fundraiser. A GUN RAFFLE!!!!! He has 10 tickets to sell. I'll probably buy 3, sell 5 or 6 at work. A few more to the neighbors. I'll probably need another 10 before its all said and done.

Finally, a fundraiser that red blooded, rednecked men can get into. You aren't gonna see fundraisers like this in the big city kids baseball leagues.

Anyone want to buy a raffle ticket?

I go to a rural university. Their baseball team funds themselves with gun raffles.

Maybe if they were raffling a Sako Finnlight in .308 I'd help out your boy's team... ;)

So where is........ Lower Pokunkia?
Lower Podunkia is right smack in the middle of Pennsylvania, next to Central Podunkia and 2 towns away from Upper Podunkia. :)
There's a college nearby, you might have heard of it.... Podunkia State University. They have a football team with rather boring uniforms and an old guy with big glasses as their coach.

Tickets are $10. There are I think 25 guns being raffled. No handguns, no semiauto rifles, maybe some semiauto shotguns, but think hunting type guns. I forgot to bring tickets to work today. I'll post a list tonight or tomorrow.

The day of the raffle they hold a barbecue at a local firemen's carnival ground. There is $1000 in cash prizes also given to people present at the raffle.

I didn't post this as a sales pitch for raffle tickets, but just for something good to post about.

But if you really want to buy one, I'll be more than willing to sell you one. PM me and we can talk about the logistics of it, especially if you're out of state.

I once won a Mossberg 935 Magnum in full turkey camo on a $5 raffle ticket. At the time, it was the "most expensive" gun I owned (it retailed for about $500), and I paid the least for it. I ended up trading it for a Marlin 30-30 lever action.

Our fire company has a gun raffle every fall. I won a Rem 700 BDL in .300 WinMag 2 years ago. I traded it to a local gun shop for a .700 SPS in .243 and a set of Leupold bases and rings. I bought 3 tickets. Best $30 I ever spent.

Here's what they're raffling, if anyone's interested. This is pertty typical of the gun raffles in this area. Some decent guns and some I'd just as soon sell and use the $$ to buy ammo or components.

Mmm. Gun raffles for VFW Teener League baseball. Reminds me of Goose Day, Fastnacht donuts, calling a "creek" a "crick," Grandma's stuffed pig stomach with wilted lettuce on Sundays, and sticky buns from The Diner.

Never heard of Goose Day before. Sounds like an Amish thing. There's lots of Amish down Mifflin County way.

The Diner's stickies are still as good as ever.

Mr. White, how far are you from the Williamsport area? I can't say I've heard of your area or your local university. I'm pretty curious, I'm north-central.

EDIT: Jeez, I just got it. Man, am I dense...

It is a joke, right? ....

*COUGH*

JC, try this ...

I say "WE ARE!"

And you say?

I say "Joe."

And you say?

I say "Happy."

And you say?

I say "State."

And you say?

I say "PS."

And what letter do "you" finish that with?

You sure you live in PA?
