I have always used a Co-Ax single stage to reload, but since I have started shooting my 40 cal. pistols lately I decided to get a LNL Progreessive. I have one of the 2009 Models with EZ-Eject coming Thursday. I see you can get the standard powder meter insert and set it for each set of die/powder combo and lock it or you can order micrometer settable powder inserts. It says it comes with standard insert and rotor for rifle and smaller rotor and insert for pistol. I need to know what is most accurate and/or handier micrometer insert or individual standard? Thanks in advance!

One of the nice things about using the inserts is that you can set them for a given cartridge/powder, press a button and remove and replace it with another in the meter.

The pistol rotors are best for small volume charges, and the rifle will do best for large volumes. The non-micrometer that came with mine (from pre 2000 model) will work for both pistol and small rifle volumes.

I purchased one rifle and one pistol micrometer. I record the micrometer setting for the power/charge/cartridge, and dial in each as needed. It would be nicer to have multiple inserts if you are loading 6-10 cartridges and doing constant changeovers.

Different powder have different accuracy levels. Ball powders are always spot on, flake powders can vary plus or minus 0.1grains, extruded are all over the map, usually 0.3 plus or minus, and that is why i weigh all extruded powder charges for bolt weapons, ans use only spherical powders for gas rifles.

For 10 grs and under use the pistol insert in the powder measure and the rifle for over 10 grs. With Trail Boss use the rifle insert as its so bulky for its weight.

I guess I will " bite the bullet" and order a micrometer rifle and pistol inserts, because it seems to make sense. I love reloading, there is always one more toy to buy. I really appreciate everybodies input, I had a notion this would be the results because of info gleaned from my earlier searches. Life is Good!
