Hello again,
First I'd like to thank those who have helped point me in the right direction with regards to my questions about oal and whatnot.
I have done some more research over the past few days and think I'm ready to attempt actually reloading a few rounds.
I would really appreciate any advice you guys choose to share on my first loads.
Firearm= Sig P938 9mm
They are as follows:
1) Berrys plated 115gr rn
OAL 1.125
IMR SR 4756 4.5gr (data from IMRs site, lead loading data lowest charge)

2) Hornady 115gr fmj rn #35557
oal 1.125
IMR SR 4756 5.2gr

Both loads are specific to my powder from Hornadys manual and IMRs loading data and are the lowest charge weight listed for the particular bullets listed above...
My main concern would be a squib, I haven't loaded anything up yet and won't till I get some feedback from some more experienced reloaders. My intention is for working up plinking loads only for now.
Primers are CCI 500 and both dummy rounds I've made up have a mouth diameter of .377 after slight crimp...

Any help/advice is greatly appreciated!

In the Hornady 7th manual for that bullet, 5.2 gr is the start load. They give an OAL of 1.100.

Your length of 1.125 would be OK too as long as it will drop in your chamber. Be sure to try that with the first one.

Looks like you are about to have a new experience. Enjoy!

James2,
Thank you for replying!
The oal for the hornady 115gr rn is the same in my 9th edition.
I have spent the last few days finding my max oal for reliable feeding for the 938 as well as researching lots of other reloading wisdom here and across the net to mitigate as many uh ohs as possible with my first loads.
Wife and I both have the 938 for carry and is the whole reason I'm learning this hobby, we would like to practice with them as much as possible because accuracy is not as easy with this tiny little handgun.
Again thank you for replying, I'm looking forward to rolling a few of my own and hitting the range this week.
Now if I can lessen the anxiety of actually firing them off I'll be doing well...

The Berry's RN will feed just fine at that oal. Bery's recommends up to mid-range jacketted bullet data for their standard plated bullets.
Your powder is good stuff.
"Press" on. :)

The spec for outside diameter at the case mouth is .380. Your .377 may be fine but especially with the plated you don't want to over-crimp and crack the plating. You just want to remove the flare.

Get yourself a notebook and keep good notes on everything. Every gun barrel is slightly different, especially at the point where the chamber ends and the rifling begins. Most barrels have a certain amount of "lead angle", this is a chamfer on the end of the rifling where the bullet first makes contact. Some barrels have a gentle chamfer to help guide the bullet smoothly into the rifling and a bullet loaded for use in a barrel like this can be seated to a longer o.a.l.. Other barrels have a more abrupt step where the rifling begins, and sometimes that will cause the rifling to contact the bullets ogive and you'll have to seat the bullet deeper for the gun to go into battery. When I start loading a new bullet I test a cartridge that's at the listed c.o.a.l. by trying it in every barrel that I own in that caliber. It's easy to remove the barrels and have them on the loading bench with you. This is the "plunk test" you've read about, if you drop the cartridge into the chamber and it freely enters the chamber to the point where the case mouth sharply comes in contact with the front of the chamber, it'll make a sharp clunk. If the bullet contacts the rifling before the case mouth hits the chamber, you'll get a dull thud if any sound at all, and the back of the cartridge will not sit flush with the back of the barrel. These are the kind of notes I was talking about keeping. As an example I have 3 guns in 9mm and 2 in .380acp. None of the 9mm's are a problem, but one of the .380's needs the bullet to be seated deeper. That gun belongs to my daughter so if I know that she's going to be shooting with us I get out my notebook, since the bullet is seated deeper I reduce the powder charge then seat the bullet according to my notes.

1SOW,
I got lucky on the powder, looked high and low trying to find one listed in the manuals I have (trying to go by the book till I have more experience) but had little luck till I drove to a little town south of where I live, gs there had 3lbs of it, I bought 2 of the three. The shop is run/owned by a fella who used to compete and has 30yrs reloading experience, he had a pound of red dot as well but said id be pleased with the IMR. I like that it is pretty fluffy and would be very hard to double charge without noticing it.
I have read on berrys site to use mid range jacketed loads for it but looking at the load data for lead has me a bit confused, lead load data lists min/max at 4.5-5.2 for IMR 4756 and jacketed data in the manuals list a min/max of 5.5-6.4... the max for lead is lower than the min for jacketed, that has me a bit spooked on the berrys because I'm a complete noob and I worry a bit as things could go badly if I get this wrong.

I've been searching for load data for the berrys and 4756 but little luck(searching this site brings up many pages but for some reason when I try to access the next page I get a message saying "Sorry, there are no matches" even if I can see 20+ pages I am only able to access the first page) very frustrating, might have something to do with the fact I'm using a nook hd dunno...
I thought id play it safe. Not sure that's the correct way to go about it which is why I'm asking pretty please for some more experienced help here...
I truly appreciate you and others on here for the help you offer, not sure id attempt this hobby if I didn't have access to you guys and the wisdom you freely share with utterly green noobs like myself...

tfflhndn,
I'll go back and play with the crimp some more, swear I just barely crimped enough to remove the flair but better safe than sorry. I've made 15-20 dummy rnds so far searching for the max oal for the 938 and found max to be around 1.130-1.140 before they start binding in the mag...
I'll fiddle with it a bit more before loading anything up for real and see if I can get it a bit closer to .380...

Centaur 1,
I do have a notebook and am keeping track of everything, very good advice!
This pistol has roughly 3/16in lead angle and is chamfered very smoothly, I have chambered a dummy measuring 1.185 but that just won't fit in the mag, my max is around 1.4 for the mag and reliable feeding before they start binding badly...
I have been using my barrel for everything to work out what is best for these loads, wife and I both have P-938s and they are the only 9mm we own so whatever I am able to work up for mine should work fine in hers I believe. I've spent the last two days researching ogive and its making sense to me now, at least more so than it did the other day...
I was able to read about the "plunk test" and perform it on the bench with the dummys I made up using the wealth of info I am able to access here, the oal I've settled on plunks nicely and drops out by gravity only but as Tfflhndn stated above I might be crimping a tad too much as the mouth diameter on the dummys are .377-.378. I need to play around with the crimp a little more I think...
So far the two bullets I've selected let me seat longer than what is listed in the manuals(these oals listed in the manuals are only what they tested the charges at from what I'm understanding) but I understand the concern with seating deeper than loading data calls for especially with the 9mm, I really like both my hands/eyes!
I positively learned that I need to start from scratch with any new bullet I get to find the oal that works with that ogive , that took a few days of research but I'm in no hurry, I want to learn how to do this right as I find this hobby quite interesting!
Thank you for taking the time to point me in the right direction, I honestly do searches before I ask questions but I am unable to access any but the first page of my searches on this stupid tablet computer I'm using, I get an error "Sorry, no matches were found" when I try to look at any page past the first one... Quite frustrating!!!
