I recently purchased some .308 FN plated bullets for my Marlin 336 & having difficulty finding load data for them I have been trying 28 gn of H4895 but don't know if that is excessive for the plated or should I drop back to hard cast lead data. Hogdons recommends 28 as a start load - 34 max. I do not see any pressure signs on the primers & the accuracy seems to be ok at 50 - 100 yards any suggestions would be appreciated

According to "most" plated bullet manufacturers you can use Cast bullet load data or up to middle jacketed bullet data. It's not a excessive pressure problem, it's a bullet problem. most of the lead/plated bullets don't need as much a push to get down the barrel as jacketed bullets do.

That said, IMO you should probably not increase your charge weights above what you're now using. I checked the Lyman Cast bullet Handbook and they don't list a powder as slow as H4896 with a 150gr cast bullet in the 30-30 and Hodgdon lists a much lower charge with a 160gr cast bullet.

I charge 21.0gr H4895 with a 165gr cast bullet and of course that's a heavier bullet than you are using but the results are very good. That load generates ~1400 fps from a Marlin levergun.

Without getting into specific loads. I've had good results with 748 with 150 gr plated bullets thru various guns chambered in .30/30. The advice not to drive them hard is sound.

Where are you getting plated bullets for the 30-30? Do they have a cannelure for crimping?

You're in the money, for better or worse.

H4895 downloads very well, as hodgdon suggests for youth loads.

It's not a sniper rifle.

Can you get 3" groups at 100 yards offhand ? Call it done.

I completely agree, a 3" group @ 100 yards is a done deal IMO too...

Thanks everyone for the info. I purchased the 150 gn plated FN bullets from everglades ammo $60.00 for 250 no canalure but I am using a Lee factory crimp on them. I will drop the H4895 down a few grains & see how they perform.

Why are you using the FCD? You don't really it for this project.

I am using a light crimp because of the Marlin being a lever action tube feed

Trail Boss with Berry Bullets. 2 in at 25 yd, 10 inch contender open sights. Have now had cataract surgery so will try again. The old eyes were not good.

Hello everyone,

I have not yet begun reloading, but I have started to get most of what I need to get started. I have the Lee Breech Lock Challenger kit, Lee Deluxe 3 Die set .270 win, and I also have 9 mm dies that I got a few years ago; I believe they are Lyman Pistol dies, I got those for my Nephew so he could reload for his 9 mm pistol. I have one reloading manual; Lee's Modern Reloading Second Edition.

I need to get: .30-30 win dies, 6.5 Carcano dies, and 7,62 x 54 mm R dies. also need to get: Calipers, Overall length gauges, more reloading manuals and other tools. Also would like to get a sonic cleaner and vibrating Tumbler, a digital scale, Chronograph, and some other "nice to have" items.

I saw this subject and was not sure if this was the proper place to ask my question I have. The question I have:

When I go to start reloading/load for the .30-30 win, there are several different .30-30 bullets and loads I would like to try, but because this is specifically about the 150 grain plated bullets I will limit my question to that. I have noticed that not all reloading manuals have all: Bullet types, Brands of bullets, Brands of Powers, brands of brass etc.. My question is how can I find a load recipe out of all of those manuals, that has specific brands listed in the recipe for the 150 grn plated bullet?

Thanks.

Do you know the manufacturer of that plated bullet ?

If you do- you can always contact the manufacturer.

There is not a lot of plated bullet for rifle data out there. Thats why forums like this are awesome :D

I plan on loading some plated Extreme 308 150gr fp for a Marlin lever 30/30. I will try Accurate 5744 and IMR 4759 for starters.
