Has anyone used 2400 and a standard rifle primer without any problems? For some reason Alliant calls for a magnum rifle primer with all of their powders when reloading the 500 Mag. Thanks for any info.

I have not reloaded the .500 S&W.
But if I did?

I would use standard primers with 2400.

2400 does not respond well to magnum primers, and since you are going to use rifle primers anyway, they are not needed.

I just read an article in handloader a while back with a similar question.

It seems some of the reloading manual publishers assume the worst, and call for mag primers because they already know somebody is gonna do it anyway.
So pressure is tested with them for a "worst case" scenario.

Anyway, that was the response from the Accurate and older Speer manual authors.

Thanks RC.

Its funny, H110/296 usually calls for a mag primer and a rep from Hodgdon don't me NOT to use A Magnum primer when loading 500 Mag. So I assumed 2400 would not because it is not called for in any of their Magnum loads except 500 Mag.

I load for 500s&w and have only used Winchester WLR (large rifle) primers with H-110, Lil"gun, 2400 and trail boss. All have shot just fine with no problems. Alot of 500s&w brass calls for LR primers. If you see a "R" on the headstamp, that is what it signifies.

Where are you finding load data for 2400 in 500 S&W mag? The only reference I can find is with 350 JSP, then only one load. 2400 is considered too fast a burn rate for the big 500.

If used, it results in low velocity loads as compared to 296 or lil-gun. Yes, they call for a federal 215 in one load and a winchester wlrm in another, both for 350 grain bullets.

Use a different powder for full-power loads.

300 Grain LSWC + G.C.
H4227 41.8 gr. 1,615

Yup, I missed the 300 lead bullet on my copy of those loads. I used this data source for many loads for my SIL's 500 smith. But I NEVER loaded 2400 in any of them. There's just many better powders to use.
One other load source I use is loaddata.com;
http://www.loaddata.com/home/index.cfm

Sign up for a year, you'll find more loads there than anywhere else..
