What is the best way to load 3 rounds in the M1 Garand? They are blanks for our American Legion firing squad.
Thanks, Willp

I would put the empty clip into the magazine and then slide the rounds into the clip. Hold it altogether until you can get on the oprod and the clip latches into place. I'm sure you could probably cut a plain clip to hold 3 if you were clever.

Thank you for the response! We don't want the clip to fly out after the 3rd shot.
The guy that was loading them did it without having the clip fly out and I'm not sure if he even used the clip but I think he may have..

The easiest way to do this would be to go out and buy five dummy .30-06 cartridges, either Snap-Caps or another brand. Load the clip correctly, and the blanks will eject in turn. Once the first dummy cartridge loads, you'll be fine. If someone forgets which round they're on, pulling the trigger will drop the hammer on the dummy cartridge, causing nothing but an embarrasing click.

Devonia has a good idea.

I have a five round hunting clip somewhere that has a tab bent out from the back of the clip to hold it in the reciever. You have to remove the trigger group and insert it in from the bottom. This stops it from ejecting, and I believe it held the bolt open after the last shot(I never used it,it came with some other clips I bought 20+ years ago).

The clip was cut and the tab was part of the back of the clip itself, rather neatly done.I am guessing it was a punch and die type cut.

The same idea could be used by making it a three round clip, like the other short clips I have seen for sale somewhere(I think they were two rounders for High Power shooting).

Thanks for the replys. I assume then that the Garand can't be loaded at all without a clip?
You can't just "top" load like most rifles?

You can stick one directly into the chamber; 'course this isn't good for the extractor and you can get a slam fire - but it can be done.

You can also add rounds to a partially full clip, but it takes two hands and it more trouble than it's really worth.

There is a single shot adapter for slow fire national match shooting.
I have seen them, but they aren't cheap by any means.
I think the five dummies and three live rounds will be the simplest way to go.
Good luck,
Robert.

To prevent the clip from ejecting you can:
modify the clip eject/safety spring
~or~
modify the clip latch in the front where it is pulled down by the operating rod catch (on last round)
~or~
Modify the op rod catch finger that pulls down on the clip latch.

The latter two methods allow the clip to be released by the clip latch button when it is pushed, but not automatically when the rifle is empty.
The former method disables the spring that pops the clip out, so removing after last round (bolt will still hold open) or when pushing the clip latch button will require the operator to lift the clip out of the rifle.

Come to think of it, I think you could buy or make a SLED--a carved up clip that doesn't eject. It's meant for single loading. You could push 3 rounds down into one though.

I think all you'd need to do is to cut a tab in the left side of a standard clip and bend it out and cut it down so that it snaps under the receiver rail.

That's right -duh me.
You can mod the clip to take any # of rounds.
Then, since the clip will not be filled, you can modify the bottom so it does not get engaged by the clip/safety spring.

3 rounds, no auto eject of clip.

There is a man named John Holbrook in Bellingham, WA that sells a modified device that worked well on my M-1. There is a fork shaped device in the lower part of the receiver, I don't remember the name, which can be modified and when reinstalled tames the M-1 so that the bolt does not fly home when a clip in put in place. If I want to load three rounds in my M-1 I just pull the bolt back, insert an empty clip, and then load the three rounds. The bolt will only close when I pull back slightly and then release. After the last round is fired I must push the clip release on the side of the receiver to release the clip. I enjoy going to the range and loading a full clip into the rifle without holding the bolt back and watching people about to yell at me to be carefull.
I will find the address of Mr. Holbrook if anyone wants to order one of these devices. As I remember the cost with shipping is about $60 to $65. Installation instructions are simple and easy to do.

John Holbrook is a genius as well as a true Gentleman.

I have never met anyone who knows as much about the M1 Garand as he does. I doubt John C. Garand knew this much.

EVERYONE who owns a Garand should have a Holbrook Thumb Saver. Period. It's the best $45 you'll ever spend. It is brilliantly simple, it replaces the op-rod catch. It can be swapped in and out with no problems.

Willp58, this would be perfect for your Legion squad. Y'all can load the EMPTY en bloc clip into the rifle then simply load your three rounds like a standard internal magazine. After the last round is fired the bolt will lock open but the clip will NOT be ejected.

I finally caught up with the guy that loaded our rifles for Funeral duty and here is the answer:
He loads a FULL clip!!!

We only fire 3 of course so noone is the wiser...After firing, we march off at Trail Arms, then load the rifles back in his van for transport.

This would never have occured to me because the thought of the loaded rifles *even blanks* is completely foreign!

This man is not a "shooter" or a hunter, so he doesn't think anything of this.
I questioned him about it and he said in 15 years there has never been one mishap.

The iinfo regarding that custom clip is great! Thank you.
