A friend bought a 303 savage at an auction, he actually thought it was a 300 savage and he has a few of those but anyway, we just ordered dies but since they are seasonal and there is a good wait on them I have time to look for brass and info on loading, does anyone here by chance reload for this oddball? any info on a good place to get brass I have found a few places online but any info on recipes would be helpful

The old Lyman manuals had data for the 303 Savage - 27th edition I belive. Unfortunatelt I am away from home or I would be able to look up the info for you.

Yes, I do, and there are actually quite of few old 303's around.

[Disclaimer - please check the data carefully, work up your loads carefully, don't take anything I say for certain, etc. and etc.]

Most any 30-30 load will work fine with the 303 Savage. The original Savage loads pushed a 190 grain bullet at around 2000 fps. Unless you're after bear or something large, 150 grain bullets work just fine. I tend to use the 30-30 style bullets for a simple reason - although the Savages have a rotary magazine and can use spitzer bullets, the magazine is a bit short to take advantage of that fact. Flat and round points fit the magazine easier. I shoot a lot of 165 grain lead bullets out of mine using a bit of Unique. There are plenty of threads here on ThR about this.

As for brass, you can do a couple of things if you can't find 303SAV brass. You can use 30-40 Krag brass to form some, but it requires the use of a lathe and a bit of work. I have heard (and have not tried this - refer to the disclaimer above) that you can cut a ring from a 40 S&W case and slide it down over a 30-30 case, all the way to the bottom. That will fit the 303SAV chamber and you can then fireform the 30-30 brass, while it keeps the web from blowing out. Try that at your own risk. Every now and then, Norma makes a run of real 303SAV brass and the prices is about the same as formed 30-40 Krag - about $1 per case.

Have fun - it's a great rifle!
