I am considering getting a new mold for my 358 Winchester. I was thinking of a bullet weight between 250 and 300 gr. and around 2000fps. But I am having difficulties finding load data for this combo. Is there anybody that has some information/load data?

Thanks a lot :) A very good read. Does anybody have any opinions on using loading data for jacketed bullets for lead boolits?

Hodgdon has data for up to 250 gr. But IMO that is too heavy for 358. Case volume is limited as is magazine length. The heavier bullets do better in cases like 35 Whelen where there is more room to work with. They show some loads reaching 2000 fps with 250's, but in the real world you won't break 2000 fps from typical carbine length barrels.

IMO once you get to 200, MAYBE 225 gr you reach the point of diminishing returns.

It’s not that you can’t push them faster but Lyman assigns load data on multiple factors. One of which is BHN. GC or no GC etc.

If you can push a 250 gr jacketed bullet past 2200 fps in a 20" barrel, you should be able to pust a 250 fr cast past 2000 fps in the same barrel with accuracy? I am planning to powder coat and gas check the bullets. I will most likely end up using a 94/3/3 alloy or there about.

2000 fps with the right alloy and powder coating has been done in many calibers more overbore than the 358 Win?

The article linked to by Black Mamba has some very interesting heavy loads using a 290 gr bullet..

I suggest you mosey over to www.castbollits.gunloads.com. Very deep knowledge and experience with all things cast bullet associated.

I have asked the same question over on the cast boolit forum as well.

My biggest problem is that we are not able to get a lot of american powders in Norway. Just a little bit of Hodgdon. And a lot of the more esoteric calibers have use mostly american powders for theire loads.

Ok, I missed the Norway part!
However, as some other posters intimated, most of the mid range burning powders can be loaded up to a full case capacity without going over pressure.

A 270-300gr .358 slug at 1900-2200fps is going to be a real juggernaut. Be sure to specify a flat-nose contour to ensure expansion and straight penetration.
Accurate Molds as well as NOE will be worth looking at.
