Hey Guys, I never loaded for my AR before. With the current panic, I decided to do that. Anyway, I have a can of h-335 powder. I do not have any primers, but I did find small rifle magnum primers. Can I use these?
Mag primers will work fine with H 335 in .223. If the data shows standard primers, stop a couple of tenths short of max, or if other signs say to stop.
You can use the magnum primers but use the normal precautions of starting at minimal loads and watch for any pressure problems. I would recommend getting a copy of Lyman's 49th handbook since you are inexperienced. At least one reloading manual is an absolute necessity and more than one is better. I think the Lyman manual is especially good for starting out. Good luck and enjoy.
I am not an inexperienced loader. I have multiple manuals such as Lyman, Nosler and hornady. I have loaded 44 mag, 9mm, 300 win/wby 308 win etc. I never thought I would load for the AR due to how cheap it WAS to shoot. I am glad I saved my brass. Anyway, thanks for the info on the primers. Much appreciated!
Actually the Speer manuals say to use a small magnum primer with H335. I am just bummed because I have 10K SRP and no magnums. Right now I am just having fun with the Reloader 7 and the AR bullets now. Pretty accurate for a lead slinger. Should have bought one 20 years ago, but I was still getting over carrying the M16 at that time. Didn't want anything to do with them dang black guns.
My apologies if I offended you by assuming you were inexperienced because you had not loaded .223. There seem to be so many people just starting to reload I wrongly assumed you were one of them. Best wishes and good luck with your .223 loads.
Speer recomends Mag primers for all ball powder. I have loaded thousands of round with standard primers and ball powder of many different calibers both hand and long guns with zero problems.
Mag primers sometimes have thicker/harder cups. Sometimes they burn hotter. Sometimes they even do both. Manufacturers sometimes label their stuff weird, too. Thinking that "magnum" in front of the word "primer" means anything particularly specific and repeatable is a mistake.
"223" designated primers should have harder cups. But it doesn't end there. Tula 223 primers also burn hotter than Tula SRM, according to the some of the retailers.
