Another rookie question. I load 40 and 45's. 40 cal. 165 gr. Berrys plated with 4.7 grs. of bullseye. Mostly practice at 21 ft. Sometimes I shoot 3in. groups and other times it looks like I'm shooting a shotgun. How do you load for accuracy . I really don't believe it's my reloads, it's my shooting. How do become a more accurate shooter?

Plated will never be as accurate as real jacketed. But, With plated bullets you have to be extremely careful not to damage the plating when crimping. Bare minimum TC is all you want, removing the flaring only. Do not push them any harder than needed. The HB seam to be more accurate than std base. HP in general are more accurate.

Most BE shooter only push the bullet fast enough to stabilize it. With 45acp 185gr that is in the 700-750fps range. I have been working on some MBC 185g SWC 12BN. My load is 4.1 gr of WST for the 25 yrd range. Note 4.4 gr is consider min.

A single stack 1911 with a light, crisp trigger will help more than anything.....and practice. When you get a 10-shot group about the size of a credit card at 25 yards, it makes you feel accomplished.

Chief 99, you might try dry firing, by placing a dime on top of your receiver and squeezing the trigger and keeping the dime balanced on your firearm.

Of course without seeing the rest of your technique, and examining your reloads, any thing else would be a guess. Anyway, at 7 yards you should be able to shoot a raggedy one hole group.

Do some research on trigger control and sight picture - so much information on YouTube.

If you want to learn to shoot pistol better here is a link to a lesson on youtube Jerry Miculek just did. He is really good. most of what he talks about is geared towards speed shooting but in this video he goes over grip and stance and some of that stuff that would be good for you. besides that focus on breathing, trigger control, shot to shot consistency with how you grip it.

Also, I grew up being told........If a handgun was meant to be shot with two hands it would have two handles on it........lol.

How do become a more accurate shooter?
The standard answer is practice but that's not the real answer. Only perfect practice makes perfect. I highly suggest you either go for lessons or read a book or two on accurate handgun shooting. they apply those ideas to some good practice and you will improve for sure.

Dry firing like suggested above is a very good way to improve your trigger control and good trigger control goes a long way towards accurate shooting.

Good luck...

Chief99 I think you are absolutely right. At 21 feet, I am almost certain that the load is not what makes the shooting inaccurate. I say that because I'm in the same boat as you. One day I can put 10 rounds into a 1.5" circle at 12 yards, the next day (or the next magazine), the target looks like buckshot at 50 yards.

Like the others said, it's not the loads, its trigger control. That's what I have to continuously work on, but that's why I'm glad I reload and practice is cheap :).

Shoot your reloads from a sand bag and see what your pistol and reloads can do. Anything outside of that group is probably you. The Jerry M. video really helped my free hand groups.

Thanks for all the replies . Doing a lot of dry firing from the recliner . Also picked up a lot of good info from you tube on trigger control. Like rsrocket1 said I think that is my main concern. I think the only way to shoot better is to keep shooting. I think I shoot to reload , not reload to shoot. Love it !

chief99,

don't get discouraged. it takes a lot of time and practice to get confident with your weapon. dry firing is free and counts as practice! if you get tired, rest. does no good to practice when your arms are shaking and your vision is blurred.

make every shot count. and be patient. this takes time.
