I just got my new NEI molds to day. the nose dia is .350, the bullet dia is .460. the weight is 440gr. what do you think a good powder charge would be I like IMR 4198 powder. It for a Marlin guide gun. I'm going to size and gas check them to.

It would help to know which cartridge. Is that guide gun 45-70?

A 420gr plain base shows 28.5 of IMR4198 as starting load for an 1895 for 1267fps and 41.5 as a max load for 1737.

The data for a Ruger #1 which is too heavy for your 1895 shows a gas checked 426 grain with a starting load of 40 grains of IMR 4198 at 1741fps and a max of 46.3 grains for 1954fps (39,200 CUP)

It also shows (for Ruger #1) a gas checked 451 grain and an IMR 4198 load of 33 grains starting for 1445 fps and a max load of 43 grains for 1883 fps (38,400 CUP) which are rated too high for your 1895.

FWIW.

dmftoy1 what reloading book are you useing. I have three and none of them have that informating.

That's all from the Lyman "Cast Bullet Handbook". I think some of the info was in the Lyman 49th as well but everything I quoted was from the "Cast Bullet Handbook". From what I can see 28k CUP is the limit of the 1895

Good Luck! (You could also probably scare up some load data in the leverguns section of castboolits.gunloads.com FWIW)

Have a good one,
Dave
