I picked up a pound of WSF the other day for giggles and am looking at loading about 5 hunnert' rounds of a hard cast 230 bullet.

This will be run through my High Point 45 Carbine, which I also bought for giggles.

Been using Titegroup and 231 just because.

Anyway, lots of barrel to burn all the slower burning powder like WSF and the High Point is designed to handle +P loads.

Not that it has to be a +P load.

Any favorite loads?

I like WSF in 9mm. I have some loaded in .45 ACP for testing this weekend in my 1911. I haven't tried WSF in .45 before, but I have used powders around the same speed.
I willl be re-testing some of my other .45 loads as well. Bullet will be a RMR 230 hardcore plated RN. (maybe some 185s if the post office gets them here in time)
I will post the chrono numbers when I have them.

(note I won't be loading to P+ pressures however)

In a straight blow back action you may find little gain from slower powders. If the powder is too slow for a 1911 pistol it will likely not run well in your carbine.
I have had good results with Unique, Accurate #5, VV N-340 and WSF in a Marlin Camp 45 and my 1911s.

9MM, not .45, but an idea of how a longer barrel can take advantage (or not) of slower powders.

------------------------------------

124 Gr plated. 3.9 Grs N320

3" EMP: 939 FPS

4.5" XDm: 1050 FPS

5.0" C 1911: 1068 FPS

5.0" S&W 1911: 1051 FPS

16" AR: 1055 FPS

This pattern has repeated its self with N320.

---------------------------------------------

88 Gr JHP. 7.1 Grs Silhouette

3" EMP: 1297 FPS

4.5" XDm: 1440 FPS

5.0" S&W 1911: 1499 FPS

16" AR: 1674 FPS

--------------------------------------------

124 Gr GD JHP. 5.7 Grs Silhouette

3" EMP: 1064 FPS

5.0" S&W 1911: 1202 FPS

16" AR: 1263 FPS

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

As you can see, with pistol powders a lot more barrel doesn't add up to a lot more velocity, but with some combinations it can be pretty good. A lot of barrel is wasted though. Just not enough powder to take advantage of them, regardless of burn speed.

These are test loads only and not necessarily safe! Use at your own risk!

Yeah, an internet search after posting this pretty much turned up the same answers.
I've been getting very nice accuracy with HP38/231, so I'll see if WSF equals or exceeds it.
I have found that 700X is less accurate than 231, however.

I worked up some loads using WSF as a backup powder for WST. But these 2 powders have totally different applications in my case. WST is used for BE loads (reduced loads) where WSF is used for full power. WSF is my main powder of choice for 9mm.

Blue,
Yeah, really don't have a use for WSF in my 9mm since I load 9mm as reduced as possible to make power factor.
Thought it might be fun for .45 where I'm not so concerned with reduced recoil and am using it in a carbine.
I'll probably load up about 25-50 rounds of WSF in 45 and see how it compares to 231.

4.3gr WSF in 9mm gives me around 1030-1050 ish with most 125s. Should make 125 PF and is pleasant to shoot.

Hopefully I will get to test some 45s with WSF this weekend.

Dude,
4.0 of Titegroup was my reduced load for 9mm 124 grain plated and jacketed and I loved it.
I love 3.6 of WST with 9mm 147 plated just a little bit more. :)

4.3 of WSF shot really well for me, HP38 and Universal also worked great.
When I have a chance I will load up some of the RMR FNs with 4.0 of Titegroup and compare them to my WSF loads and shoot them over the chrono.

I see your happy with Titegroup but since you have some WSF you might want to give it a try. Other seem to like it in 9mm as well.
I just got some of the new RMR 147gr "Target" HPs and have some loaded up with a couple different powders to try. WSF and Titegoup and some others.em.
Dosen't look like I will get to chrono as it will probably be raining and I will be shooting a the indoor range this weekend but I will do the chrono on the WSF an Titegroup when I have a chance.

Been wanting to try WST but for some reason my LGS wanted $29.99 an lb when all the other WSF, Titegroup, HP38, CFE Pistol, Longshot were between $22-$25.
Heard some good thing about WST in light - med 9mm loads.
