I am too lazy to even bother typing it so I scanned it and threw it up on here. Here is a link so you can view it easier. I don't want to wreak havoc on the thread haha.

That made me think he has a 1911 haha. I had the paper by me and figured it would be easier since they aren't always too reliable about getting their full stories up. Hannibal, OH is maybe 20 miles from here and said that it happened about midnight Monday... 40 minutes later. I honestly think it is tied together and the description reminds me of my ex's dad. 5'10ish with dark hair and a goatee...

Safety on, 7 shots, I love my 1911's but stories like this make me glad I have Glocks too.

"The sheriff's deputy asked why I shot at them seven times," said Gifford. "I told him I ran out of ammunition. If I had a machine gun I would have emptied that too."

Didn't some cops a while back shoot at a guy 60-70 times, only stoping when out of ammo? That's a great quote

Here in WV my friend was carjacked at gunpoint and talked the guy out of killing him, was driven back a dirt road and kicked out of the vehicle... The guy then left and ended up driving towards Charleston and when he ran out of gas and turned on the cops and fired at them and they shot him numerous times. Then they got my friend back the car with 25+ bullet holes in it and the insurance company said "It is fine... you can drive it with the holes." I had to laugh at that. They fought forever to get the insurance to finally total the car and give them the money lol.

Little jittery?..... yeah, well, being assaulted by armed guys will do that to ya I guess...

The story reminds me why not a single gun of mine has the safety on.

I hope you're not a hunter! :)

Glad there wasn't a snippet about him being charged for using deadly force on a retreating 'threat'.... if he had plugged one of them in the head as they fled, this might be much much worse.... not saying I approve of that, just saying...

The problem was not the safety, but the lack of familiarity with the mechanics of the weapon, undoubtedly coupled with a lack of practice.

Without a doubt. Know how to use the things that your life may depend on.

There you go the guy will probably be shopping for a revolver or spending a little more time out back learning the gun.

D. N. SPY - "The problem was not the safety, but the lack of familiarity with the mechanics of the weapon, undoubtedly coupled with a lack of practice."

Sounds that way to me, too. Glad he was finally able to get his pistol into action... without one of the bad guys shooting or cutting him.

I too am one that does not use safeties on my handguns. The way I see it is if I need a safety then I am not storing or carrying my gun correctly. Hunting with a rifle or pistol is a different matter though.

Tom is a pretty old guy too by the way. He had some fairly serious medical conditions not long ago if I remember correctly. I don't recall if the article states his full name but Tom is "Gifford". I am surprised they didn't slap him with charges honestly... they fined a guy and made him pay his attackers hospital bills a couple years back because there was a guy that was breaking into houses all over town while people were home... he got caught and the guy that caught him wrapped a tire iron around his head and ended up having to pay all the hospital bills because "use of force was unnecessary when he could have just detained him" I believe they passed some self defense laws after that to protect people who defend themselves though.

I knew a guy in the army who had worked with the local Sheriff in drug raids back in the 80s. He was always on point with his Beretta, because he's short. Once they rammed the door, and it swung open to reveal a BG with a sawed-off pointing straight at my buddy's nose. When the smoke cleared, the BG's head and chest were obliterated, because my buddy had done exactly what infantrymen are trained to do. The police supervisor yelled at him, asking;

"Why did you put 16 bullets in that man?!"

"Because I didn't have time to reload. Sir."

That agency decided that maybe it wasn't the best idea to have national guard soldiers deputized as cops.

Cute comments & a lucky guy. In many places in America he would be sitting jail. While I certainly don't agree with that thought process, he screwed up big time by following them outside and shooting at a fleeing vehicle. He would have been much better served by dropping them drt. It's a lot easier to explain two armed dead guys than why you shot at a fleeing vehicle. Suppose they had carjacked the family minivan and still had the family in the van? Suppose one of his downrange shots ended up elsewhere?

Lucky guy. Me? I'm shooting to stop the commission of a violent felony. They're running away? Shoot, they're driving away? I'm not shooting. It don't take much to end up on the wrong side of the law in situations like these and this guy was lucky.

Yeah honestly I wouldn't shoot at a fleeing man unless he is fleeing because he shot me first. If they point a gun at me and I have one near by I am not giving them a chance to pull the trigger first. Knife or gun... armed is armed... I will protect myself. What you don't see in the image is this store sits by the main road and a LOT of houses sit in one direction. If they fled from the store headed towards where I am now the only thing would have been a post office and an empty park within handgun range.

I actually checked the date of the scanned newspaper to be sure it's not from the 1960's.

If the store owner isn't in deep poopie for firing at a fleeing vehicle, I say: God Bless West Virginia!

Yup, When they (media) asked why they shot him so many times he said, "That was all the ammo we had"

Practice practice pratice....I think of it as a fire extinguisher, don't need till you need it, then you need it real bad. Did I mention you need to practice?
