Aren't these minutemen the group that President Bush called "vigilantes"?

Anyone know anything about this group called the "Coalition for Professional Law and Border Enforcement"??

SEATTLE — A group of civilian vigilantes have taken post along America's northern border in hopes of strengthening what they see as a vulnerable security system in this country. Armed with radios and binoculars, the "Minutemen," as they are called, are looking for foreigners crossing illegally into Washington state.

To some they are patriotic heroes, but to others their views are racist and unfair. Some local residents in areas patrolled by the Minutemen are saying these amateur border guards are the real danger.

"That is a racist organization that is blatantly anti-immigrant and blatantly — for me, anti-Mexican — and I have a problem with that," said Rosalinda Guillen of the Coalition for Professional Law and Border Enforcement. (search)

The Minutemen gained national attention last spring with their first foray into national security along Arizona's border with Mexico. Hundreds of volunteers produced a front that deterred illegal border crossing, and arrests of illegal immigrants dropped significantly during that time.

The all-volunteer coalition is aware though of some recent attacks on their values, and some local politicians and activists are now calling for the Minutemen to disperse.

The Washington Democratic Party and Bellingham City Council both drafted resolutions denouncing the Minutemen, a group they say is a magnet for dangerous militia type groups.

Tom Williams of the Northern Minuteman Project (search) said, "We just want everyone to come through the ports of entry like you and I do, and sign in and let Homeland Security figure out if they're supposed to be here or not."

"We don't want people walking across the border and blowing something up," he said.

Critics warn that not only is the process unfair, it's dangerous and it's only a matter of time before there's trouble.

"I don't want somebody thinking just because my son might be brown-skinned or something, walking around, that 'Oh my God, he looks like a terrorist,' or 'Oh my God, he looks like an illegal alien — I'm going to detain him with a gun,'" said Terry Bornemann of the Bellingham City Council.

The minutemen stress they don't detain anyone, they simply alert Border Control and are there as a deterrent. Although the Border Control security forces have tripled in size since 9/11, critics say they're still not up to their monumental task.

"We still continue to experience smuggling activity. We also have concerns about terrorists entering the country," said Whatcom County Sheriff Bill Elfo.

For all the controversy generated by the presence of the Minutemen, two weeks of northern patrols have produced not a single incident of illegal border crossing at their locations, nor a single complaint lodged about their conduct.

Originally only planning to stay on the border for a few weeks in October, the group has pledged to stay longer to prove they are not a danger to society, but are rather there to protect it.

Well I bet they don't pass the "People's Democratic Republic" test.

The only information I find on them when searching is references to them on various Washington State are "Peace and Justice" type web sites, so I'm figuring they are just moonbat lefties out there "tryin' to keep tha bubbas in line"

More evidence of moonbattery:
The Coalition for Professional Law and Border Enforcement meets at the Unitarian Fellowship, 1708 I St., [Bellingham, WA] at 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays.

Who needs border patrol anyhow! Darn those Minutemen, I bet they are members of the KKK.

"We're hoping that Gov. Gregoire takes a serious look at this and make it clear that militia and the Minutemen with their violence and racism are not welcomed here," said Bellingham Councilwoman Barbara Ryan, who sponsored the measure. She said the city has sent the resolution to Gregoire's office urging her to adopt a similar position for the state.

"The presence of these folks is disturbing because we have a long history of militia activity that has targeted people of color," said Ryan. "This is not the image we need here." http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2002560044_minutemen14m.html
What about the long history of people of color targeting people of color?

Seriously though, what militia activity are they talking about?

reading from the leftwing playbook--the entire history of the U.S. of A. Our history, to them, is all about white men gone wild
Got-cha, page 36, leftwing handbook "all men are evil, all white men are evil dogs and all white men with guns are racist evil dogs"

.

Seems to me that as long as your son isn't cutting a border fence and squeezing his ass through it, he wouldn't have any sort of problem.
Oh wait...what border fence?

Anybody besides me find it intriguing that with all the hootin' and hollerin', the only violence at all has been directed AGAINST the Minutemen?

And, somehow, it's EVIL to merely sit and watch along our borders, doing no more than telephoning or radioing to the Border Patrol when illegals are seen to cross into the U.S.?

Yet, "Neighborhood Watch" is highly recommended in cities throughout the U.S. Nobody objects at all to little old ladies, sitting and watching, calling the cops when they see illegal activities...

Seems to me that, as is all too common, "hypocrisy" is an appropriate word for those who are so vocally against the Minutemen.

royal flush

To attack the Minutemen is to assault the basic principles of self-defense, defense against tyranny, defense of sovereignty and citizenship, right to keep and bear arms, and individual citizen empowerment, all anathema to the militant leftwing and its running mice. The Left knows what it's doing and what's at stake here.

That's just FOX parroting our great and glorious "leader". It's important they all use the same terminology.

Now just wait a minute. If they are patrolling the northern border, wouldn't that make them "anti-Canadian"?

Maybe, just maybe, what really drives the Minutemen is the not bigotry against Hispanics, but a dislike for the massive uncontrolled illegal immigration.

No surprise

The Bellingham city council is peopled by the biggest bunch of pansy-waisted limpwristed liberals between Vancouver and Seattle. It truly is San-Fran North; the city is run as if the local university (Western WA University) was the living avatar of whatever pagan god is 'PC' at the moment. Much of the public monies are spent on improvements that serve the needs of the student population, and local policy as dictated by the city board reflects the needs of a militantly leftist majority of the university.

Whatcom county, while mostly rural, was a red county by virtue of WWU and the numerous retired hippies that have come to live here, as Bellingham is effectively a cheaper, smaller San Francisco.

The largest problem along the border here is drug smuggling, typically pot or heroin from the markets and growers in British Columbia. Every week there is a new bust of some smuggler, most of whom are college or highschool students who have been smuggling drugs for quite some time before getting caught.
In some areas the border is not even marked, as it straddles neighborhoods. There is camera monitoring of course, and due to the rampant smuggling security is taken seriously by agents, casual crossers are approached by border patrol swiftly.
Then of course there is the mighty long tunnel that was found straddling the border, between two residences on either side.

One must also note, however, that Whatcom county is populated most heavily on about 15-20% of its land area. It stretches over a hundred miles east from the coast and well into the cascade mountain range, with the few border urban centers left behind after a few miles. There is a border patrol presence in the rural areas, both marked and undercover vehicles, and a fancy new surveillance system that they installed recently. However much of the east county border is crossable with a few steps, with no one around for miles.

Personally, as a resident of Whatcom county, I welcome the Minutemen, because I take border integrity and the drug problem seriously. However, as I have said, I am not surprised that certain locals are up in arms over their presence. The ones worried about their next fix, anyway, or looking cool to their peers- being all extreem PC, sticking it to the racist 'man' and such.
