Locking up your shotgun- thoughts?

Kids have friends and people stop by so mine are locked up. I've talked with some other folks about this and another option is to run a full cuff or saddle so the guns unlocked and unloaded. Not the best option but I think it beats the heck out of key searching.

Sorry to hear about the dog. New one in the plans? Plenty of good dogs at the shelter in your area I bet. I've got two rescued seventy pound speed bumps at my feet currently. Get two; they're infinitely more fun ;)

you need to decide whether you want the gun as a weapon or for peace of mind. A weapon is readily brought to action, stored that way. A peace of mind firearm gives the owner a false sense of security thinking they can load it if need be. Realize the bad guys aren't going to announce they plans, if they are mad, crazy enough to come into your home while you are there, they intend to do harm. There is no time to find and slam home a clip, cycle the action, those precious few seconds could be used to bring your weapon to defense. Loaded weapons should always be stored up and out of the way of small inquisitive children.

I have a shotlock, and I like it. Do a YouTube search for shotlock review. Basically it will fit your gun as long as you don't have 1) rear sights 2) side saddles 3) a very large/weird pistol grip (some pg are ok, like mine)

Thanks! Re: the weird-shape part, do you think it'll fit the old square-back Brownings?

I am retired and live with my wife in the woods away from towns. I keep a 20 gauge coach gun in the corner loaded with 3 buck, but I lower the hammers. These are internal hammers. I lower them by snapping them on snap caps, pulling the fore end off, opening and loading the barrels with 3 buck, close action and install fore end. The hammers cannot cock with the fore end off and the gun has floating firing pins so that it's completely safe to store this way. If I need it, I'll just have to break the action and close, cocks the hammers.

That coach gun is a multi-use gun, my favorite dove gun, my favorite walk in the woods gun, does duty for home defense, and sometimes rides in the truck with me. It's the one long gun I do not lock up.

"do you think it'll fit the old square-back Brownings"

watch this video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B__2cFEp89M

semi-autos mount a little differently, they don't use the 'breach-post', they use the trigger blocks. The rounded rectangle hole in the top is where your "charging handle" thingy sticks out.

I can't answer exactly, but do this as a close estimate.

draw a rectangle 7" x 3.75" - this is the inner-dimensions of the main 'box'
draw the rounded rectangle hole, which is 7/8" x 1-7/8"
this hole sits 1/2" from the top and 1-1/8 from the right

if your gun is higher than 3.75", then it won't work
if your trigger guard sits outside of the main box, then I don't think it will work.
if your charging handle doesn't fit through the hole, then I don't think it will work. (this gets tricky though, should handle be in rearward position while storing?? Idk)
In a perfect world, you would have an inch or two of room where the back of the trigger guard isn't too close to edge of the main box, this way the trigger block could do its job. you could easily alter this thing and customize your own trigger blocks

in the video, the gun is facing left, yours would face right.

^^^ Thanks for that detail and the dimensions info. I'll do the measurements and see what results I get. The video combined with what you wrote about the dimensions makes me think it'll be tight, mainly due to the position of the charging handle if the charging handle has to fit into the window that is visible in the video and in the photos on the website. But I suppose I could enlarge the window some to accommodate the charging handle.

Another thing I noticed on the gallery page of the website is that they don't seem to be positioning the charging handle of semi-autos on the window side. http://www.shotlock.com/Gallery.asp

Didn't bother to read all the comments, but the first thing that popped into my mind (lucky it stayed there long enough to type this) was "get another dog".
