Just saw this on gunbroker going for a pretty fine price me thinks for those interested in such things..... Why are these long barreled ones mostly brass frames anyways?

It looks like someone put a long barrel on a brass frame '58, the barrel and frame don't seem to match very good ...I would walk away fast.

I believe it had a buy it now price in the $170's range. I'm not interested buying it, just figured I would give a heads up to folks here in case anyone was looking for one

Thata a 1858 bison or buffalo model, i have one got it from cabelas for $249 nice accurate gun but you become a slave to the brass if you like shiney, mine has adj. sights, not very historic correct they are also available in staimless and regular steel but trying to find the regular steel is impossible , pghrich

If the stars lined up just right (money, opportunity, steel frame), I would buy one. I have fired a couple of them and they shoot rather well.

If someone really wants to build a steel frame Pietta Buffalo model, VTI lists the blue Buffalo target barrel with sight and loading lever retainer for $115.

I believe the steel framed ones are available in Canada, but not the USA>

Pietta isn't the only company to have ever made a steel frame Buffalo model.

Great piece of brass!
The original post shows a 12 inch barrel Pietta buffalo or sometimes called Bison. They are fantastically accurate and I routinely shoot mine at 40 yds. If I sit on my butt and rest the barrel on my knee, every shot will go right in the black on a 25 yard target. It holds 2 1/2 groups easily.
I use 25G FFFg and it is plenty of powder. As far as the brass frame, it will hold up just fine with normal loads, I have been shooting mine since 1986!
The only problem I have had was having to replace the "Hand". it plain wore out after about 3000 shots, but I will take some of the blame for that, as I tend to really yank back hard on the hammer when shooting fast.
One of the most accurate charcoal burners I have and if I had not been able to repair and replace the hand on mine I was ready to go buy another!

I don't have one of these but.....
I do have an SAA with a 12" barrel on it that likes to feed on 45 Colt Black Powder cartridges. I've had the SAA since 1980 and I have to admit those long barrels are wickedly accurate when loaded with the correct load for the gun.

Well, I have Pietta Buffalo Yank, steel framed 1858 with adjustable target sights; it is very accurate and a plesure to shoot - even with 35 grains Vesuvit LC and Kaido bullets...funny thing is that I found it equal or even more accurate with Lee connical or Kaido bullets than round ball.
