I have alot of experience with my m44 and all of it good so what I would recomend is first take the bayonet off completely then adjust for your windage till your happy with it. Otherwise u will shoot 4" to the left every 100yds. Then u go and buy a muzzle brake off amazon for 12 bucks. Now take the action out of the rifle and disasemble the trigger mech. take the spring from the trigger and cut/file/sand/polish it tilll it is about half as wide in the middle. At this point it is easy to dial in a good trigger pull with a file and a nailfile. I have mine set to around 3-4#. That will help you get a really consitent shot. I don' think I would bother with a scope, it's a nice Idea but the 91/30 is a better route to go there. There is a really nice replacement sight from:

I haven't done it myself but you can read about it at

This guy is great with non byassed reviews he also has a great write up on a sporterised mosin
I have personal done under 2" groups at 80-100 yards on a stalking range with my m44.
Thats all I've got have fun--

Romak-3's and PSL's are very nice guns. They'll do what you need. Some people say they're not accurate, but those are the exception, not the rule. They're quite accurate if you feed them right (they only should be fed 147-155 grain ammunition) and don't shoot them loose with heavier loads. There's also a few things you can do to improve them further, such as relieving some wood inside the lower handguard to partially freefloat them.

My understanding is the the OP wanted to do this on the cheap. My point is that he will not get a quality rifle that will perform like he says he wants it to on the cheap. The dollar amount comes out to be about the same whichever route he goes, and the sporterized military rifle will be inferior to factory Savages and Remingtons in ammo availability, accuracy, and trigger pull. For those who deny that ammo availability is an issue, go to any place that sells ammo and look at the selection of .270, then look at what's available for his gun.

If he wants to spend time and money sporterizing a military gun with the understanding that he's not saving money, then by all means he should do so. He just needs to understand that considering the value of time (And yes, time is valuable to anyone who has a job, family or any other responsibilities), the sporterized rifle will cost him more and will likely not perform as well. But if the goal is to get an adequately performing rifle for hunting out to 200 yards or so for the lowest possible investment, a used modern design sporter is the winner hands down.

Again, a lot of this discussion presupposes that an inexpensive milsurp rifle must be modded to become an acceptable hunting rifle. That is not necessarily so. Some, but not all, milsurps are perfectly usable as is. Personally, I do not have enough confidence in the accuracy of my 91/30 to hunt with it, but I would not hesitate to take my Finn M39 into the field.

If someone one simply wants to tinker with an old milsurp, that's OK. I like to keep my old rifles as they were made, but that's a personal decision and I cannot criticize anyone who chooses to modify a rifle they've bought with their own money. Some will act as though modifying a milsurp is an act of heresy, predicated on the idea that these guns must be preserved for future collectors. Mosin-Nagants in particular may have been manufactured for the collective defense in the Soviet Union, but they have since become private property once the communists sold them all to us capitalists here in America. So, I say do as you like with them.

I didn't need it cheap-cheap. If I can make a Nagant as nice as a base-line Savage for about the same price, that's bonus points, but if Remington or Savage or someone made a boltie in x54r, that would be just as good.

I'm just a fan of the round, want to keep my closet simple, and already fully understand deer-worthy x54r is likely to cost more than .30-06. As long as it's not three times the price, that's fine.
