long range recommendations

I'm thinking about some long range shooting... could be upwards of 300 yards. Not willing to spend more than 200 or so.
I need the rifle to come under 250 with shipping and FFL transfer.
I don't mind milsurp, but I would like to mount a scope.
The ammo should be reasonable.....
semi-auto, lever-, bolt, whatever. I just want that long-range shot.
Any suggestions or observations welcome.

I'm a savage kinda guy myself. But that'll put you back $449 (includes 4x12 scope) at the local SportMart. Best deal I could find.

For around 2 bills, I'd try the Milsurp or N.E.F. route.

NEF is probably the best way to go.

I'd like to get one in .280 Remington or .25-06.

For that price range I'd say a Yugo M48 or a Mauser M98.

A really neat item would be a Spanish FR8...something I'm looking for myself!

NEF's would seem like a good deal, but for those long ranges I am pretty sure I'd put a bipod on, and putting one on a break-open rifle is kind of odd.

NEF with a bipod! ODD? NEVER!!! Only the shooter feels odd, the rifle would by more than happy to have a bipod. I rather haul a bipod on my rifle than a 20 pound sand bag on my back when walking out to a dog town for some vermin smacken.

go with the NEF. I regularly shoot out to about 600 yards with my .243 handi-rifle. two recomendations. 1. get one with the bull barrel. 2. I would highly recomend the survivor stock setup. I replaced the wood stock because it felt weird. I LOVE the survivor stock, its lighter. some say it is ugly. but it is very comfortable to shoor. a bipod is a good choice although I don't have one on mine yet. I will put one on as soon as I get the cash. BTW, you can get the bull barrel and the synthetic stock in 308 in the survivor series.

Any surp military rifle such as the Mausers or Nagants or the swede 6.5 should do the trick.

the h&r/NEF is really a great way to go. get one in .308 for about the same price as buying 2 surp rifles.

I had the H&R ultra rifle in 223. Great rifle, shoulda NEVER sold it.
i made consistent hits at 300 with that rilfe and a cheap bushnell 6x scope.

I'd love an NEF.
acouple a problems.
With shipping, FFL transfer, and a bull barrel survivor stock, the price for the rifle is climbing upwards of 350$!!!
Also I am wary of a bipod on a break open...

Start lurking the gun shows, and don't expect the buy the first time out. Go early in the morning and look at what people are carrying, not what's on the tables. Make low offers, negotiate a little, and have the cash to back it up.
