I was wondering, what does everyone use for long range shooting (200 and up)

What kind of rifle, loads, and what do you shoot at? (reactive cubes clay pigeons, balloons)

I use a savage 114 in 30-06 with a 6-18 nikon buckmaster at 250 yards with clay pigeons

I have shot several deer with a .30-06 over 225 yds. I have friends who go out west and have killed deer over 300 yds with a .30-06.

for me its a 1874 mod sharps in 50-90 I shoot a 3ft 2inch thick lump of steel.

My brother and I went out to his friends place. We wanted to do some shooting so I could start compileing info for a BDC. We had 400 yrds to shoot in this time, and the wind I believe was in excess of 12 mph. I didn't want to waste my handloads, so I let them shoot a box of federal premium175gr SMK . that particular bullet was dropping 11.5 inches and was drifting 12 inches to the left with the wind. they got close to the 8 inch circle, and the friend actually hit inside the circle. I was trying to coach them but they would not listen to me. I averaged 1 3/8 inch groups kinda sorta, my last shot went into a beer can and was like a 1/2 inch from my poa to poi. What I want to base my bdc on is handloaded 168 smk with IMR4895 powder, and cci benchrest primers. I will try again later when its not so windy. Little flags at your target help bunches! Rifle is a Remington 700 sps-Varmint in .308 with Burris XTR3-12x50 cradled in a Bell&Carlson Varmint/Tactcal stock.

I use a Tikka 595 22-250 / Nikon Monarch 6-24x50 rig for stuff out to 600 yds on a good day. More like 500yds on average. Looking at a larger caliber rifle for a bit more distance.

For targets:

Balloons, clay pigeons, steel gongs, prairie dogs, coyotes.

Out to 300 yards:
.30-30
.375 Win
.45-70

Out to 500 yards:
.257 Roberts
.308 Win
.30-06

Out to 600 yards (as far as I can go at the local range):
7mm Rem Mag
.300 Win Mag

Was at the range today with Daughter #1 ooting balloons at 200 and 300, clay pigeons at 400 and stell at 500. The .257 Roberts was the "Pigeon King". Also had a .308 Win and .22-250.

Out to 450 Yd. 8MM Mauser k98, U.S. Rifle cal .30 M1, SKS, FN Mauser .270,

out to 200 yd. .17HMR Savage 9317BVSS, Mossberg 46M .22LR

Out to 150 Yd .22LR Marlin 39A, Ruger Mark II .22LR

targets at long range, water Bottles (full), 12" x 12"x 1/2" steel plate. I use stick on targets. 3 gallon buckets.

out to 200 I use golf balls, tennis balls, pop cans, etc. clay pigeons 3".

Furthest I shoot is 600yd for now and for that it's my DPMS DCM. It does about .75MOA on average when I have it on a bench. Targets are NRA MR targets for high power competition. My loads are 24.7gr Varget and a 75gr Hornady BTHP Match bullet.

0-1000yds Remmy 700 .308 w/ 4-14 Mk4 308 44.5g Varget 178amax or 175 SMK

1000+ 700p in 300wm 190gsmk 70.4g rl22 or if its windy 220gsmk 70.1g 4831 Glass is a 8-25MK4

Targets are steel gongs 3/4" cutoffs roughly 15"x15" Steel is great as that distance as you can hear and see your shot. Paper is no fun after a few trips out and back to check your shots.

Up to 200 I use my 30-30, both a Steven's 200 and AR-15 in .223, my Tikka laminated stainless .243, CZ 452 in .22 LR or Marlin 925 in .22LR, targets might be paper, plastic bottles full of water, clay pigeons, turnips, maters.....

Past 200 I grab my Tikka .243 with either my 55 gr. Sierra Blitzkings or 87 gr. Hornady Vmax bullets and I have found old wore out circular saw blades work well as the bullet punches through and you hear a loud sharp "TING" to know you hit it.

For iron sights I set up B-27 silhouettes at 500.

Scope work is helium filled balloons from 200-500. Tie a string to the balloon, and then stake them in place. Makes for a nice, reactive moving target that's easy to control the diameter of.
