I think by now Zak had a button installed on his mouse to create that post every time this question comes up. 
FWIW, I had the same questions and(fortunately) found and read the articles. I found them to be rather informative and well written.
Now, if only I had somewhere nearby I could get to regularly that has a range farther than 300yds.
Oh, and a few big bags of money.

thank you zak for the same links as my question about foundamentals of precision shooting but what about the specific rifles i had mentioned. what makes the savage and 700 action better than the mod 70? why is the bolt considered better then the breach load encore? not only im i looking for a long range shooter but whats good at long range is good for some big game hunting. now the .308 is the best match round but lacks take down power. .300 has take down power but i personally think the ballastics are alittle challenging for long range. what about 7mm mag? ballisticaly speaking a good round on paper. the links are most helpful dont get me wrong but im looking for the information between the lines, the information that comes from experience.
i know where to find 10fp's for about 550 but remington doesn't make pss's any more theres only three gun broker and the couple i did find localy were alot more expensive than the suggested article price, i know gas has alot to do with that, but they just dont seem to readily avalible.

Someone asking this question is likely new to long-range shooting. The key to making long-range hits-- on targets or game -- is shooter skill. Shooter skill is developed by consistent and voluminous practice. Practice is made possibly by affordable ammo and a shootable cartridge (ie, low recoil).
Many factory rifles these days are capable of 1 MOA accuracy with some ammunition. Thus, mechanical accuracy of the rifle is rarely the issue. Often an inadequate sighting system is used, or the shooter does have enough practice to take advantage of what even a moderately LR-capable cartridge can offer.
A magnum cartridge is often a poor starting long-range cartridge because the ammunition is expensive and the rifle has recoil such that it is very easy to develop bad habits. 308 is not the best long-range cartridge, nor is it the best match cartridge (as you said), but it is a good starting cartridge because recoil is low, factory ammunition is available for both hunting and "match" almost everywhere, and it is reasonably competent at medium ranges (say 300-700 yards). It is effective on game further than the vast majority of shooters can shoot it precisely.
