Long range scope ideas for an M1A

I am looking for ideas on what would be a moderate priced ($250 range) adjustable scope for my match grade M1A. I have a Redfield 3-9 Variable on it now and I wanted something a little bit better and closer to a military scope. I would appreciate ny ideas. :banghead: Bil

Check out Leupolds stuff, what kinda power shooting you want to do cause seriously that rifle does not need a scope even at 600 yards if your any good with it, but if you want a fancy nancy scope on it then I do suggest Leupold, in my opinion best scope makers. Always had great service, reliablity and functionality at an affordable price.

Also is this for a match with scoped rifle? Also in optics you dont want to go cheap you aint gotta go tops but optics are just as important as the weapon you intend to mount them to if you get crap optics you get crap back.

With a scope I am assuming he is not giong to be shooting High Power compettion cause he wont be allowed to use the scope, there are other scoped competitions out there however.

If you go to Snipers Hide you will find discussions of low end usable scopes. I have a Sightron 4-16 Mil Dot on my Tactical Savage and it is a great scope for the bucks. It has taken 4 years of pounding and still keeps ticking.

Considering his 3 x 9 Redfield, although a fine quality hunting scope, is not what he wants, he is probably looking for something like a long-range sniping scope with higher magnification range, 4 x 12 or higher, and turret adjustment knobs. He could try the BSA models in that price range. The Leopolds and IORs would be about three times that price... Lighted reticules are excellent, but add considerably to the cost...about $1,000, but well worth it!

I didn't want too large a scope on my M14NM...

So I went with the excellent Weaver V-16 series (4-16x) of scopes. Their objective lenses don't go larger than 42mm, keeping the scope low. If you want more magnification, the Weaver V-24 (6-24x) scopes keeps the same objective lens diameter.

Neither of the two Weaver scopes offers a mil-dot reticle in 16x or 24x magnifications, if that's what you have your heart set on. I've been using the distance between thick stadia, thin stadia, and the crosshairs as an impromptu rangefinder. If ever switch scopes to a mil-dot, I'd get another Sightron S-II 4-16x42 like I have on my Remington 700 PSS.

Have you tried a Mueller?

I just bought a basic 3 - 10X44 (non-illuminated) for my .308 and am impressed (http://www.muelleroptics.com). The scope feels nice and solid, is clear, and has solid, repeatable adjustments.

Price was right.

It might not have the reputation of some of the others, but seems like a good deal to me!

2nd the Mueller. Have two of their scopes (one on a shotgun for deer hunting and one on an Encore) and seem to be rock-solid.

Also really like my Burris Fullfield II for the money.

I will probably spend about that amount for one of those two types of scopes for new rifles i get from now on.
