Long Term Storage of Rifle

I have promised a couple rifles to my grandson who is now 11yrs old, but in his eyes he is almost 12. I told him that two of my rifles in particular would have to wait until his 21st birthday. My question is about very long time storage to insure the rifles will be functional and rust free. I gave serious thought about just coating the heck with grease of some type and vacuum sealed bags. Any thoughts or suggestions.

10 years is a long time to store guns without any use. Why not just give them to him now with the understanding that you will keep and maintain them until later? That way when he visits you the 2 of you can enjoy them together. This way they are his and he can use them under your supervision. You get to spend quality time with him, teaching him the things grandfathers should.

You can buy cans of cosmoline online in some places. If it can protect a Soviet rifle for 60 years, it can protect any gun for 10.

Why is this such a problem? I have one Sako that has never been fired. In fact, it has only been out of the plastic a few times. I have not done anything to it at all. I did drop some oil down the barrel recently but other than that nothing and there is no rust or anything on it at all, that I am aware of. Perhaps this is because it has never been used. I have no idea. I can say that I have had it for the better part of 3+ years now and it looks just like it did when I brought it home. I just take it out every now and then put some things together, cycle it a few times, remove the bolt, put it back in plastic and back in the box. That's it. maybe I should be doing more. You guys have me worried now and if I should be doing more I would love to know what.

Oh, and I am a firm believer of the silicon sock.
