I have this beautiful double barreled shotgun that I want to store long term for my grandson down the road. It's in pristine shape and want to keep it that way. What is the best way to store it outside of a gun cabinet. I was thinking of a foam lined hard case but I'm afraid it might leave marks from the foam. Do they make a treated gun sock of any other type of case. Any help would be appreciated.

Even the yellow can of Johnson's Paste Wax will work in conjunction with a sock of sorts. Someone had a Browning one that wasn't just silicone sprayed but was had a VCI treatment.

I would make sure I released any springs that might be under tension and would probably store it broken down into its three components.

I kept a Remington Model 29 in a soft gun sleeve in a closet for nearly 15 years. I initially wiped it down with Rem Oil and reapplied every year or three if I remembered it. No harm was done.

I think I would store the sock in a cardboard box (check gun stores for boxes taken from new guns) to protect it in case it is banged around. A sock won't protect wood from dents or metal from dinges if the gun falls over or is hit by something.

anecdote:
Had a similar experience with RemOil on rifles (in fabric cases), over a couple decades.
The rifles were wiped down & bore mopped with RemOil every three years or so.
All were kept in a climate controlled space, away from moisture.

fwiw, not a trace of rust.

I have a similar problem I'm trying to work through:

I'm going to need to put my firearms and ammo in a long-term storage locker for approximately 1 year. My firearms will be stored inside a safe, my ammo in individual sealed ammo cans. The storage site is located in KC area, so it will be subject to pretty significant fluxuations in temperature and humidity.

Some ideas I have for the firearms:

1. Using a zerust protection module in the safe
2. X2 750 gram silica dry packs
3. Wipe down guns with oil
4. Seal the safe with tape to reduce humidity buildup

For ammo:

1. All ammo stored / sealed in seperate ammo cases
2. Silica dry packs in each ammo box

Note: I do not have access to any electrical outlets in this storage unit, so I have to deal with the humidity with a non-electrical solution.

One concern I have with storing guns wet is sometimes the lubricant on the weapon can react to the case the gun is stored in. I don't want to risk marking up the finish.

Any suggestions are appreciated.
