I am going to test Longshot for .40, as its specs seem interesting. Hodgdon lists the following for a 155 grain XTP bullet out of a 4" barrel:

8.5 grains, 1244 FPS, 29,800 PSI
and
10.0 grains, 1329 FPS, 32,300 PSI

I am unable to find any other references for Longshot and .40 S&W in any manual I have to correlate Hodgdon's stated charge weight.

Has anyone done longshot in .40? And if not, any thoughts other than, "start low" ?

Thanks in advance.

Reference:
LONGSHOT "Hodgdon Basic Reloader's Manual 2002": LONGSHOT 6.0 gr.,
1.125", 4", 200 gr. HDY XTP, 954 fps, 32,500 psi

I started at the book load and worked up in a Glock 22 40 S&W with improved case support......
At 12 gr. the OAL springs out to 1.160", 12 gr. blew a small hole in case.
Looks like extractor pulled head loose from weld to case body, +100%
extra powder

My opinion is that LONGSHOT is a good powder for 40sw, but not as good as power pistol, which is not as good as 800X.

From Clark: "My opinion is that LONGSHOT is a good powder for 40sw, but not as good as power pistol, which is not as good as 800X."

I decided to test Longshot because it had the highest velocity with the lowest pressure I could find, by a significant margin. I felt this would give me plenty of room to load down and find a sweet spot my my Glock 27 and I liked. Why do you think 800x is better? Thanks.

I haven't used it but I often hear longshot referred to as "loudshot".

longshot is an exelent powder for .40 it works great in 10mm as well.also meters better than 800x.the hodgdon data is good use the starting load and work up.
BTW the starting 10mm load of longshot with a 180 XTP chronoed 1220fps from my 4" S&W 610

Maybe in the world of published loads, but per my work ups, Longshot can't get velocity in 10mm like 800X can get velocity.
And Longshot looses the contest while making plenty of pressure.
