So I was flipping through the 2006 Hogden reloading guide tonight and I looked at the loads for 40 S&W. The 180 grain XTP with 8 grains of longshot produces 1160 fps!:what: This would be an awesome load, I'd like to load up some XTP's with this recipe.:D A 180 grain bullet at this velocity would hit like a mack truck.:D

I could easily say that is why most of us shoot 10mm's instead.....

My experience with longshot is it delivers the goods pretty well and meters nicely.

One question to consider though is your gun up to the task of handling that much more power then a normal 40? This is why I switched to true 10mm's over 9mm to 40 conversions. I found that you can start beating the gun up pretty good if you try to take the 40 to 10mm power levels.

Good luck and work up slowly. Longshot does not appear to be very peaky in its performance, but I treat it with respect and careful attention to detail.

I think my XD 40 can handle it, plus I would only be loading 100 rounds of this stuff for emergency use. It would not be a load that I would shoot on a regular basis.

You may want to get an increased power recoil spring, and swap springs when you'll be shooting the heavy stuff. Longshot and IMR HiSkor 800-X are both capable of some pretty crazy velocities.

40 S&W w/200 gr
I loaded up some powders to see how much the 40 S&W case would hold with a .655" Berry's 200 gr. FMJ FP bullet and a 1.120" OAL set seating die.
When the bullet start oozing back out of the case, there is to muchpowder to be practical. 1.175" is about the limit for G22 mags with this bullet.
Bookload:
1) 6 gr. LONGSHOT "Hodgdon Basic Reloader's Manual 2002": ,1.125", 4", 200 gr. HDY XTP, 954 fps, 32,500 psi
Test:
a) 12 gr. LONGSHOT the OAL springs out to 1.160", 12 gr. blew a small hole in case. Modifed G22 barrel for better case support. Looks like extractor pulled head loose from weld to case body, +100% extra powder

10mm w/ 180 gr
Bookload:
1) 9.5 gr. LONGSHOT max Hodgdon, 180 gr. SIE JHC, WLP, 1.260", 5", 1287fps 34.6 kpsi
Test:
a) 9.5 gr. G20 stock, WLP 1.26", 180 gr. FMJ FP .58", ok, 0% extra powder
b) 9.75 gr. G20 stock, WLP 1.26", 180 gr. FMJ FP .58", bulge, 3% extra powder
c) 11.5 gr. G20 stock, 30-30 brass, 180 gr. FMJ PP .58", ok, 21% extra powder
d) 12 gr. G20 stock, 30-30 brass, 180 gr. FMJ PP .58", bulge, 26% extra powder
e) 13.2 gr. G20 Barsto, WLP 1.26", 180 gr. FMJ FP .58", bulge, 39% extra powder

What does it all mean?
800X is better.

I loaded 7.8 grs. of Longshot under a Remington 180 JHP and got and average of 1,117 fps in a Glock 23. It's pretty stout - even in a G22.

I love using Longshot in for the .40. I've loaded up to 8.2grs of Longshot under a 180gr bullet, but no further, at least for the time being. 8.8grs of Longshot underneath a 165gr Gold Dot produces 1250fps. 135's can be shot out at over 1500fps.

800X is great. I've loaded up over 7grs of this underneath a 200gr XTP, it was pretty stout. Out of a 4" tube, you can get that bullet at over 1100fps.

Ramshots Enforcer is good too, it takes a lot but it can push a 155gr bullet close to 1400fps, and a 165gr close to 1350fps....out of a .40 S&W without any issues.
