I'm looking for a good 9mm revolver. I'd like something between 2 and 4 inches with a frame made of steel, preferably stainless. I don't like lightweight guns. A hidden or shrouded hammer is a plus, but not a requirement. Capacity should be at least 6 rounds. I've seen a bunch on Taurus web site, but nothing on Smith and Wessons. Unfortunately, Taurus reputation is spotty.

I've finally decided this is a great idea for defensive revolver. With 9mm, I don't need to reload another caliber as I would with a .38 Special, but with the significantly smaller case size of the 9mm, I wind up with a smaller gun that has more punch. After realizing this, I have to wonder why someone would buy a .38 revolver over a 9mm.

ruger sp-101 9mm

i have one and i love it..reloads way faster than speedloaders, recoil is very mild. try it you will like it.

Here is part of another post I made about a similar question:

The main advantage the .38 has is the ability to use any bullet design it wants- revolvers are not picky about feeding different bullets. This allows the revolver to shoot bullets with a deep, wide hollow point that would never feed in an automatic. Try loading a 158gr lead hollow point, with that huge hollow cavity in a 9mm casing. Then, IF you got it to load and feed, try pushing it to 900fps or so out of a 3" barrel. There is a reason that the FBI used a S&W model 13 3" for many years, loaded with a .38special +P lead hollow point. That combo was, and still is, an awesome duo for personal protection.

Also, the 9mm is faster out of a short barrel due to the extremely high pressures. If you are gonna shoot a 9mm in a little pistol why not use a .357? I'd think that 9mm would tear a little J-Frame apart as fast as 125gr. .357 magnums would. Auto pistols tend to stand up to high pressure rounds a bit better than a small or medium frame revolver (say a glock 19 vs. an S&W K-frame)

If you want a 9mm, get an autopistol, and if you want a revolver get it in .38, .357, or .44

The only revolvers of any quality I've heard of in 9mm are snubby 5 shots, made by taurus, ruger, or S&W.

You can get some used revolvers in 9mm
Short list
Ruger
SP101 5 shot 2" and 3" barrel uses moonclips
Blackhawk convertable

S&W
547 3" and 4" barrels blue Round butt and Square butt respectfully uses cool ejector
940 2" and 3" barrels SS shrouded hammer uses moonclips

The Medusa Revolver and cylinder unit for S&W 586
will shoot just about any .35 caliber round
If I forgot any OOOPS!!!

The 9mm is a great round for a snubbie because it is more efficient in a short space when compared to a 38 or 357. Most of the powder in a 357 when shot in a snubbie is burned out side of the barrel.
If you are gonna shoot a 9mm in a little pistol why not use a .357? Because the 9mm reciols less and uses less powder for most of the energy of the 357

Find a S&W 940, You are going to pay about $450 today, and try it you will like it. I had one and sold it for a 642 that I am putting a 940 cylinder in to make a franken942.

For 6 round capacity, you should look at the old Ruger Speed Six. They are still out there, but it may take some time to locate one. I love mine.

I disagree with 357wheelgunner as well. I passed up a 2 3/4" speed six several years ago and still kick myself.

I do have to say that you will get more energy and velocity out of 357, but you will pay for it with blst and flash with increased recoil. Where a 9mm will burn its powder in it's 3.6" barrel, adding the cylinder and the barrel.

I've got a minty one with 3" barrel and both factory hammers (DAO and spurred DA/SA). I might part with it for an absolutely obscene amount of money. :D

I just checked with my loacl shop. They can get the new Taurus 905I Instant Backup 9mm for about $350. It has a shorter cylinder so you actually get a slightly smaller gun going to 9mm rather than just moon clips. But, it's only a 5 shot.

Seems there are a lot of these 9mm revo threads going around right now. Wonder what has everyone's interest up? Tax refunds?

It might also be possible to have a 38 spl or 357 cut for moon clips and chambers reamed to take 9mm but accuracy might suffer compared to a deticated gun.
