Hi,

I recently got 400 bullets in .30 caliber. I am looking for some load data on them. It is a mix of 180gr and 150gr silvertips. I attached some photo's showing them:

The left bullet is the 180grain bullet, length is 1.209"
The right one is the 150grain bullet, length is 1.020"

I am looking to find what type/brand they are, what a load with VV N-140
would be, and the seating depth. (I figure, when I have the brand/type, I could find this out). Using it for 100 - 600 meter target shooting.

I tried the 180grain bullet with 40grain of VV N-140, Federal LR primer and with an OAL of 2.795" already and it did produce a .7 MOA group at 100 Meters (109 yards) (and I do blame the shooter for this ;) ). Primers looked fine and the recoil was about the same as the Lapua 155gr Scenar factory ammo.

Any insight thoughts tips are well appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

They sure look like the Silvertip's I used many years ago. If I remeber correctly the one with the double cannelure was designed for 300 H&H or 300 Win Mag.

If they are Sivertips, and they look like they are, they are Winchester brand, nobody else made them.

They are standard cup and core bullets; generic 150 and 180 grain data will work.
You can seat them to the cannelure like the factory did or you can adjust the seating to control the jump to the rifling or fit your magazine. There is not likely to be a tested "recipe" with Silvertips and N140, you just must apply good reloading practice and common sense. Seems like you have already done pretty well with a .7" group at 100 metres, these are not intended as target bullets.

The extra cannelure is so you can tell the different bullet weights apart in loaded ammunition. No groove above the case mouth, 180; groove present, 150.

By the way, you didn't say what cartridge you are loading them in, I presume .308 but don't know for sure.

Hi Tony, Jim, Thanks for the insight. I loaded them in a .308 cartridge indeed (Lapua Brass with Federal primers). I will experiment a bit with the seating depth as now I used the data for a generic 180gr bullet indeed and they could go a bit deeper.

Those would indeed be Winchesters.

If your loading them for hunting, one thing you might want to keep in mind with them, they had a tendency to open up pretty quickly due to the large exposed tip. I know it has an aluminum cover on it, but that don't take much of an impact. It probably won't be a big issue with the .308, but if you bump them up to upper '06 velocities they might get a bit nasty on a white tail.

I had a couple hundred of the 150's and still have some of the Remington 150gr Bronze Points, they were both decent for deer if kept within about 2800fps @ the muzzle.
